How to Say ‘President’ in Hebrew

נָשִׂיא

listen and repeaRight now the fifth Israeli Presidential Conference is taking place in Jerusalem.

 

נְשִׂיא מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, מָר שִׁמְעוֹן פֶּרֶס President of the State of Israel, Mr. Shimon Peres listen

The word for president is נָשִׂיא (listen and repeat). In the original Biblical Hebrew, נשיא referred to a person of stature and leadership in a particular group or tribe. The root of the word is נ.שׂ.א (n.s.a) meaning raising up.For example:

וְעִידַת הַנָּשִׂיא מִתְרַחֶשֶׁת כָּעֵת בִּירוּשָלַיִם.

The Presidential Conference (literally, the Conference of the President) is taking place right now in Jerusalem. listen
