לְהָזִיז אֶת הַשָּׁעוֹן Daylight savings time started today in the United States. The Hebrew expression for to move the clock is the same as the English: לְהָזִיז אֶת הַשָּׁעוֹן (leh-hah-ZEEZ et hah-shah-OHN).

To move, as in, “I’m moving from one spot on the carpet to the other” – a simple פעל action deriving from the root, ז.ו.ז (z.w.z), meaning move – is לָזוּז (lah-ZOOZ).

To express the idea of moving something else, Hebrew takes the root ז.ו.ז and places it into the active-causative הפעיל verb form, rendering להזיז (leh-hah-ZEEZ). It’s not a person moving herself, it’s a person moving something else – such as a clock – a שעון (shah-OHN).
