Authorities in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung, one of Indonesia’s tourist destination cities, will be questioning the owner of Soldaten Kaffee over his reasons for opening a Nazi-theme café, AP reported.

The new café includes a wall of Nazi-era memorabilia, including the large swastika flag and giant portrait of Adolf Hitler, without which you can’t really call yourself a Nazi theme café.

The cafe has been in business since April 2011, but it took a recent article in a local English-language newspaper, which resulted in angry responses from both foreign tourists and Indonesians, the get the local government interested.

Bandung Deputy Mayor Ayi Vivananda sent a letter Thursday summoning Soldaten Kaffee owner Henry Mulyana to a meeting to discuss whether he could be charged with inciting racial hatred.

“Those symbols are internationally recognized to represent violence and racism,” Vivananda told the AP.

Mulyana denied being a Nazi sympathizer or a fan of Adolf Hitler. “I’m just a businessman, not a politician,” he argued. “I have a right to design my restaurant with anything that attracts people to come. I’m sure that I’m not violating any laws.’’

For the time being, Mulyana has shut down his business, and he might consider a different theme, possibly less controversial. He may also be looking for new workers, because he may have to let his staff go.

It isn’t clear if they returned the SS uniform when the whole thing ended. Which is something one wonders about the actual SS men as well.

  1. Foreign tourists who objected are arrogant and silly. They go watch Nazi movies full of Nazi memoribilia parties pay n antisemitic influences at its best and they never say a word bcz it's local ART. I tell them leave the indonesian guy make business and prosper you arrogant envious suckers and giant turkeys.

  2. The cinema in the western countries is full of Nazi memorabilia and those foreign hypocrites who are objecting to that Indonesian themed-restaurant, they pay money in the theatres to watch live Nazi memorabilia and Nazi drama with charismatic Nazi characters played by western actors on a 20m wide screen, produced by western entertainment companies, with probably a neo-Nazi group sitting next to them. Then follows the reviews and Nazi snapshots all over the printed and electronic media to take home. It cannot be anti-semitic nor racist to use a visually compelling historical theme to attract customers which was made compelling and attractive by western popular culture in cinema and literature, otherwise ban all that jazz from the market, personally I would agree since I’m a firm believer of respectful responsible freedom of speech. Plus, if that Indonesian guy was counting on neo-Nazis to boost his clients in Indonesia, he would’ve gone bankrupt and closed already. His clients are attracted by the memorabilia which was made attractive in post-war western culture, they enjoy the cinematic experience of eating almost inside a movie set, not celebrating the concentration camps and war crimes as idiots are implying. Other historical leaders and empires did ten folds worse harm and their memories are still celebrated across museums and cultural centers around the western countries and the same horrific persecution, discrimination and war massacre methods are underway never ceased in our present times, also celebrated and admired by many in the western world. Think before you open that mouthfull of cheese.
