As 15th of Shvat occurs this week, Harav Elyashiv Shlita was asked regarding planting trees in yards surrounding synagogues. Harav Elyashiv referred to a psak by Rabbi Akiva Eiger (Orach Chaim 150:1) stating that since the Shul is a "Mikdash Me-at" (a small or reduced temple) it carries many of the halachot (laws) of the Beit Hamikdash, and specifically the "Azara" and as such planting a tree on its grounds is prohibited.

(It should be noted that this issue is debated amongst the Achronim and there are opinions to the contrary as well)
