Across Israel, Meir Panim responds to the growing needs of the country’s 1.75 million impoverished residents through various food and social service programs.
The seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuos are a time of spiritual awakening; a time when we strive to achieve growth in many areas of our lives. The one area, however, in which growth is not appreciated is our weight. The following are some great products you can use on Shavuos that won’t cause an overload on the scales.
Michele’s Syrup (Michele’s Foods, OU parve) is probably the best line of syrup I have ever tasted. This is no exaggeration. The taste and the texture are amazing. The other day for breakfast we had pancakes. As we are trying to watch the weight, I searched the house for lite syrup - there was none. So I took out the bottles that Michele had sent me and did the math. Two tablespoons were three points. We each had four pancakes covered with one tablespoon of syrup – wow! We tried the Honey Cr?me and were overwhelmed. The syrup was not too thick and was just sweet enough, with a very subtle taste of honey. Michele also produces syrups in Maple Cr?me and Butter Pecan. Now that you have the syrup - here is a great product to pour it on:
Gefen Pancake and Waffle Mix (Kenover Marketing, OU parve). As many of you may have noticed, products with the Gefen label are appearing in many varieties on your grocer’s shelf. Their pancake mix is one of my favorites. It is simple and easy to use – just add water (or a water and milk combination) to the mix – and within a few minutes the aroma of pancakes is drawing your family to the kitchen. We have tried both the chocolate chip and
original (it’s also available in blueberry) and they are great. You can also use the mix to make waffles or crepes - perfect for a dairy Shavuos lunch. You can find them at your kosher grocery or your local supermarket. Gefen also has a line of mustards that will add spice and flavor to your meat and poultry dishes.
Are you always walking the refrigerated section of the grocery looking for new and tasty salads and side dishes to add to your menu? Well now you need to look no further then the display of:
Sabra Salads (Blue and White Corp, parve) An old favorite with a great line of chumus, tehina and other Middle Eastern specialties, they have added some flavor to tuna and have created a couple of great new salads. A few weeks ago we tried the tuna with roasted pepper – a real Italian-tasting treat that is great on crackers or a roll. The favorite all around though, was the Israeli style with pickles and eggs. Who doesn’t love a tuna sandwich with a sour pickle? Now you have both flavors in an easy-to-open, handy container. A perfect snack or lunch for any member of your family. As with all Sabra products, you can find the new tunas in your local grocery or supermarket.
So, now we have pancakes, syrup and side dishes. But every good hostess (and Mom) is always looking for a good salad dressing. Well here is a great one:
Blanchard & Blanchard (OU, parve and dairy) makes a line of dressings so good your salad will call for more of it. From Russian Tomato to Caesar Parmesan, the flavors are rich and full bodied without being overwhelming in any way. They are all natural and low in fat - and a great hit with anyone who tries them. As a matter of fact, the only complaint I heard was that the Caesar dressing was dairy and not parve. The dressings are produced in Vermont in small kitchens giving them a unique homemade taste.
