Take a moment. Close your eyes, breathe in deeply, now exhale slowly… That was easy, wasn’t it?

There are children who cannot take breathing for granted. Some babies are born gasping for air and for some children an injury or illness can turn every breath into a struggle. A Vapotherm is a machine that helps children who are in respiratory distress to breathe more easily. The Kuppermann Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, located in the heart of Jerusalem, needs your help to purchase another Vapotherm machine. This machine will help hundreds of children.

Hodaya is a sweet and lively little girl who tragically fell off a slide and her world completely changed. Hodaya’s dad shared, “One day, my wife called crying hysterically. She told me to meet her and our daughter at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. When I arrived, I could not believe that my little girl was hurt so badly. Hodaya is alive today because the doctors kept trying to save her life and they did not give up. The Vapotherm machine helped her breathe for days and eventually she got stronger and was able to breathe on her own. The doctors say it will take time, but she will be okay.”

Professor Elie Picard, Head of Shaare Zedek Medical Center’s Pediatric Pulmonology Department shares, “Vapotherm machines are a vital part of our pediatric care for children in respiratory distress. This machine helps children who would otherwise be on ventilators to breathe with the assistance of the machine and eventually be weaned and breathe on their own. As we expand and treat more patients, we need additional machines to be able to meet the needs of all of our patients.”

Since 1902, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a public non-profit hospital located near Mt. Herzl in Jerusalem, has served the medical needs of both residents of and visitors to Jerusalem. This past year alone, over three quarters of a million patients were treated by the doctors and staff at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a 13% increase from last year. More than 22,000 babies were born in Shaare Zedek last year and over 23,000 children were treated in our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department—more than twice the number of young patients treated in this department five years ago.

Shaare Zedek Medical Center is expanding to meet the growing medical needs of the Jerusalem community. Our growth and development efforts are thanks to the generosity of donors like you.

You can make a difference for children like Hodaya. You can help save lives. You can give the breath of life. Donate today.
