MIDEAST ISRAEL LANDSCAPES

Straight from the heart of Jerusalem comes the only English talk show on broadcast radio in the State of Israel (106.5FM). Yishai and Malkah Fleisher, two well-known internet radio personalities, made the leap to broadcast radio on the new Galey Yisrael station in Israel blazing a trail to create content for the growing segment of the Israeli public that speaks English. Here at JewishPress.com we are proud to present this week’s Yishai Fleisher Show online for listening and for download in cooperation with Galey Yisrael radio.

This week’s show takes on Iran and the military option versus the real solution, ingathering of the diaspora at a fork in the road, Jewish family safety, and robots at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Liberation and the Jewish Fight Against Fear

Yishai and Malkah share stories of liberation in a week when the Torah portion (Vaeira) describes the beginnings of the Jewish people’s fight against Egyptian slavery three and a half thousand years ago. Yishai meets a Bedouin Muslim Israeli family that has served proudly in the IDF for generations; and Malkah describes her adventure trying to get a taxi to drive her home to the Mt. of Olives Jewish neighborhood. Don’t miss Yishai’s dream at the end of the segment that brings together high tech and the ancient daily routine of Jerusalem.

Policy Heavyweights Miss Obvious Iran Solution

A review of the increasingly serious media discussions on how to handle the Iranian regime’s determination to develop nuclear weapons. This segment provides all the angles, military options, sanctions and their effectiveness, motivation of the parties, assessment of covert operations, and more. Yishai analyzes several recent media pieces from Russia TV Today, The Charlie Rose Show, and Morning Joe on MSNBC and draws different conclusions.

Rock-Proofing and Middle Eastern Reintegration

Yehuda HaKohen, alternative peace activist and educator, joins Yishai at the garage while his windows are being rock-proofed. How to be safe with a young Jewish family in Eastern Jerusalem when agitating anti-peace elements in Arab society encourage teenagers to throw rocks at cars of Jewish residents. Why are the boys throwing rocks? What benefits does carrying a gun provide compared to alternative low tech measures? Yishai and Yehuda analyze how and why the legal system and international forces appear to be hindering progress toward normalization. The segment ends with a debate on the positive aspects of Hamas versus Fatah : why does the Arab man in the street vote for Hamas?

Shining A Light From Exile?

Yishai invites his friend and Yeshiva University fellow alum Rabbi Shimshon Nadel to the Talpiot area mall. They settle into the Aroma Cafe in the Kinyon HaDar mall to look at the fork in the road facing the Jewish population of the world: gather into the Jewish ancestral land in Israel, stay in the diaspora, or split the camps. Yishai and Rabbi Shimshon cover three issues that converge on this question: 1. How to be a light onto the nations? Where do the Jews belong? 2. For the purpose of safety should we split the camps of the Jewish people into those “home” outside Israel and those who return to Israel? 3. Is America safe? Why do we believe that America is a safer haven than Israel?

Following the Boston Marathon bombing, one crucial point will likely remain overlooked. The most loathsome aspect of this or any other terror bombing attack on civilians will always lie in the inexpressibility of physical pain. While all decent people will abhor the idea of bombs expressly directed at the innocent, whether here or in other countries, none will ever be able to process the very deepest horrors of what has been inflicted.

It’s only natural to see increasing evidence of Jerusalem’s glorious Jewish past being unearthed, quite literally, under modern Israeli sovereignty. The new archaeological finds are also very timely – as the Arab onslaught attempting to detach Jerusalem from its Jewish roots gains steam, the facts on the ground, or “under” the ground, show quite otherwise.

The Talmud (Berachot 26b) says, “tefillot avot tiknum” – “prayer was established by the avot.” The Talmud then uses the following verse (Bereshit 19:27) to prove how Avraham established prayer: “Vayaskem Avraham baboker el hamakom asher amad sham et pnei Hashem” – “And Avraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before God.”

Nearly 13 years ago, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak journeyed to Camp David to end the conflict with the Palestinians. With the approval of President Clinton, he offered Yasir Arafat an independent Palestinian state in almost all of the West Bank, Gaza and in part of Jerusalem. Arafat said no.

The news that the Internal Revenue Service unfairly targeted conservative groups has brought renewed spotlight on a 2010 lawsuit filed by the pro-Israel group Z Street, which alleges it was also singled out by the IRS when applying for tax-exempt status.

In an editorial last week (“Circling the Wagons”) we noted the efforts by the administration and its supporters to dismiss allegations that the government’s spin on the Benghazi attack was designed to shield the president and that the IRS was improperly used to stifle opposition to Mr. Obama’s reelection.

As the controversies besetting the Obama administration continue to grow in number and intensity, the prospect that President Obama would seriously consider military action against Iran, should that country continue its drive to become a nuclear power, becomes more and more remote. So we welcome the current enhancement of sanctions against Iran on the federal and New York State levels.

To his parents’ friends, he was “Mrs. Greenberg’s disgrace,” but to sports fans he is one of the greatest – if not the greatest – Jewish baseball players of all time. Long before Sandy Koufax, Hank Greenberg excited Jewish sports fans with his prowess on the baseball diamond.

To eat is to live – to keep our physical bodies alive. For without the body, there is nothing. No experience. No memory. No joy and no hardship. But man, unlike animals, eats to live and to enjoy. So how should a Jew respond when he is challenged as to why he imposes upon himself not just ceremonies dedicated to the enjoyment of eating but even more to the limiting of what he can eat?

Neither Secretary of State Kerry nor the president he serves seem to understand Russia’s goals in the Middle East.
