Hundreds of residents of Hashmonaim and the surrounding areas demonstrated against the intention of the Israel Defense Forces to capitulate to the Israeli leftist groups and the local Arabs. The IDF engineers and military experts had designed the path of the Security Fence near the Arab villages Naalin and Medya, but because of an appeal to the Israel High Court by a resident of Shilat representing the Arab residents and Leftist groups, the military was considering modifying the Security Fence’s path.
The residents of the Hashmonaim and the surrounding communities oppose moving the fence
closer to the Jewish communities of Modiin, Hashmonaim, Lapid and Shilat. The fence’s new path would place the Jewish residents in serious danger from terrorists who could shoot Jewish residents with impunity and escape the long arm of the IDF by fleeing to the Arab communities.
“We are not against our Arab neighbors,” declared the spokesman of the residents, “We are for the lives of our children and demand the placement of the security fence in its original location to prevent terrorists from wounding or killing our families.”
Hundreds of Jewish residents gathered at the Naalin checkpoint and demanded that the IDF stand firm and not capitulate to the Leftist forces or to the local Arabs. The demonstrators emphasized that the fence would not destroy the olive trees or fields of the Arabs. The residents also contacted Minister Effi Eitam and he promised to raise the matter with the
military leaders and the Security Cabinet.

It really is time for painful sacrifices for peace. No one wants his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to suffer the pangs of war and strife. It is time to end the strife and make peace in the Middle East.
Israel is a country that understands security concerns. Many civil rights have been sacrificed in the name of security and Israelis are used to being checked every time they enter a shopping center, a large store or any public building. Americans recently learned that they, too, are subject to many checks on their most private activities.
The Israeli Parliament is usually controlled by a coalition of different political parties because no one party receives enough votes to have a majority. Unlike in the U.S., where there are two major political parties and one of the two political parties commands a majority of the seats in the Senate and/or in the House, in Israel the government is composed of many, many small political parties, each pushing its own agenda.
