Even if, as Middle East expert Eli E. Hertz often emphasizes, “UN Resolution 181 was valid today (which it is not), then so would be the provision in Part III-D that stipulates that after 10 years, the city’s international status could be subject to a referendum of all Jerusalemites regarding a change in the status of the city – a decision that today, as in the past, would have been made by the city’s decisive Jewish majority.”

And so, whether it’s Gingrich, Romney or someone else who gets to do it, the long-awaited relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem would not only be an important signal of American support for Israel, but also an official negation of the false Arab claim that the UN recommendation to internationalize Jerusalem is – or ever was – binding.
