All Eyes On Kerry And Hagel

Sen. John Kerry

Sen. John Kerry

The Washington buzz earlier this week was that President Obama had decided on Sen. John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and was close to settling on former Republican senator Chuck Hagel as his new secretary of defense.

Sen. Kerry has been a leading member of the Democratic Party’s foreign policy establishment for many years and since January 2009 has served as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. During the course of his 26 years in the Senate he has been a reliable and ready vote in favor of legislative and other initiatives promoted by supporters of Israel and is generally considered to be one the strongest friends of Israel in government.

The Jerusalem Post has noted, however, that while he always voted for Israel, he was never viewed as a leader on pro-Israel issues, something that may loom large if he were to head the State Department.

We also recall that in his 2004 campaign for president he spoke of a role for America as “an honest broker” in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians. And therein lies another reason for concern.

At the time, we questioned whether true friends really seek arms-length relationships, and indeed that was one of the reasons for our endorsement of George W. Bush. We feel the same sense of concern now that Mr. Kerry seems poised to become the next secretary of state. The last thing we need is the most senior foreign policy adviser to President Obama counseling him against taking Israel’s side – in the interest of being “an honest broker” – in complicated political negotiations with the Arab world. We firmly believe that unless the Palestinians and their allies are made to understand that America will stand with Israel come what may, their demands will never be realistic and peace well nigh impossible.

Sen. Hagel raises many more concerns and they are rather straightforward. He has opposed sanctions against Iran related to its nuclear efforts and has raised the idea of living with a nuclear Iran. He regularly voted against pro-Israel initiatives in the Senate including supporting Israel during the second intifada and calling on the EU to classify Hizbullah as a terrorist organization. He has also pushed for the U.S. to recognize and negotiate with Hamas.

Though as defense secretary Mr. Hegel would not have a secretary of state’s impact on foreign policy, we need only recall the nefarious role played by Caspar Weinberger, who as President Reagan’s secretary of defense was a constant anti-Israel irritant in what was a generally pro-Israel administration.

Should he get the nod as defense secretary, Mr. Hegel will bear close scrutiny by supporters of Israel over the course of the next four years.

  1. Chuck Hagel's remark about the Jewish lobby's intimidation is racist and condescending. If he had said the same thing about the NAACP, La Raza etc, no one would expect him to be considered.

Hagel's views on Iran deeply contradict the truthfulness of "all options are on the table."

I have yet to hear one Democratic Senator questioning this terrible choice.

What does the New York delegation have to say about appointing him?

    • Senator Coryn has said he would oppose Hagel.

Senators Mcain, Chamblis, Ayotte, Snowe, Rubio, and Boxer have expressed reservations.

But Senator Schumer has not said one word.

This is an extremely important issue.

No one should ever vote for Senator Schumer if he does not express
      himself against Hagel now.

  2. Edward Lobel says:

While I do not know enough "facts" about Hagel, I do know enough that as of now, he cannot be trusted to do the right things on Israel!

On the other hand, I know a lot about John Kerry.

Several years ago I had a breakfast with Senator Kerry (OK it was in a small gathering of a local club and while there were about 30 people at the reakfast, I sat right next to the senator and before the "speeches" started, we had a lengthy conversation about many things.

At one point in the conversation he asked me if I had any idea of when the event was scheduled to end as he had to leave to attend his best friend's son's Bar Mitzvah! What the senator did not know iand what I did know (and what only a handful of people may have known at that time) was his best friend was his brother!

You see Senator Kerry's grandparents were Jewish and for whatever reason, his parents decided to raise him as a catholic! It was later in life when he and his brother found out about their grandparents that his brother (along with the fact that the lady he was going to marry was Jewish,) would "re-adopt" his families heritage. For whatever reason and there are probably many, the senator decided to remain as a Chatholic.

Aside from being pro Israel, he would NEVER do anything he would conceive of damaging his relationship with his brother or hurt the honor of his ancesters.

So when it comes to the foreign policy of the United States as relates to Israel, all Jews should feel very safe that he will do the right thing!

Following the Boston Marathon bombing, one crucial point will likely remain overlooked. The most loathsome aspect of this or any other terror bombing attack on civilians will always lie in the inexpressibility of physical pain. While all decent people will abhor the idea of bombs expressly directed at the innocent, whether here or in other countries, none will ever be able to process the very deepest horrors of what has been inflicted.

It’s only natural to see increasing evidence of Jerusalem’s glorious Jewish past being unearthed, quite literally, under modern Israeli sovereignty. The new archaeological finds are also very timely – as the Arab onslaught attempting to detach Jerusalem from its Jewish roots gains steam, the facts on the ground, or “under” the ground, show quite otherwise.

The Talmud (Berachot 26b) says, “tefillot avot tiknum” – “prayer was established by the avot.” The Talmud then uses the following verse (Bereshit 19:27) to prove how Avraham established prayer: “Vayaskem Avraham baboker el hamakom asher amad sham et pnei Hashem” – “And Avraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before God.”

Nearly 13 years ago, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak journeyed to Camp David to end the conflict with the Palestinians. With the approval of President Clinton, he offered Yasir Arafat an independent Palestinian state in almost all of the West Bank, Gaza and in part of Jerusalem. Arafat said no.

The news that the Internal Revenue Service unfairly targeted conservative groups has brought renewed spotlight on a 2010 lawsuit filed by the pro-Israel group Z Street, which alleges it was also singled out by the IRS when applying for tax-exempt status.

In an editorial last week (“Circling the Wagons”) we noted the efforts by the administration and its supporters to dismiss allegations that the government’s spin on the Benghazi attack was designed to shield the president and that the IRS was improperly used to stifle opposition to Mr. Obama’s reelection.

As the controversies besetting the Obama administration continue to grow in number and intensity, the prospect that President Obama would seriously consider military action against Iran, should that country continue its drive to become a nuclear power, becomes more and more remote. So we welcome the current enhancement of sanctions against Iran on the federal and New York State levels.

To eat is to live – to keep our physical bodies alive. For without the body, there is nothing. No experience. No memory. No joy and no hardship. But man, unlike animals, eats to live and to enjoy. So how should a Jew respond when he is challenged as to why he imposes upon himself not just ceremonies dedicated to the enjoyment of eating but even more to the limiting of what he can eat?

Neither Secretary of State Kerry nor the president he serves seem to understand Russia’s goals in the Middle East.

Two recent revelations have raised serious questions about the kind of government President Obama is running.

We were dismayed by the announcement last week from Google that it was changing the name “Palestinian Territories” to “Palestine” across its products. In explaining the action, a Google spokesman said that “We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries…. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and other international organizations.”

It seems clear that there is a lot more to the current developments regarding Syria than Israel’s bombing some sites there, though staunching the flow of Iranian weapons to Hizbullah through Syria is plainly a significant objective.

Secretary of State John Kerry’s recent embrace of the Arab Peace Initiative is, to say the least, unnerving. Certainly the response of Arab leaders to his action reflects the dangers for Israel inherent in the plan. President Obama seems to be preoccupied these days with Syria and Iran as well as serious domestic issues and is largely leaving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Mr. Kerry. But the secretary of state seems poised to roil things up without any prospect of real progress.

Syria’s civil war is fast becoming one of the Obama administration’s greatest foreign policy challenges, for the moment even surpassing Iran’s march toward nuclear weaponry in its urgency. Together, both issues have effectively derailed the president’s long-range intention to focus on Asia and the emerging economic and military developments in China and other nations in the so-called Asian Pivot.

The investigation into the Boston bombings is still in its early stages but what seems to be emerging is that the presumed perpetrators were not directly linked to any foreign terrorist infrastructure. Rather, they were individual Americans radicalized by jihadist teachings and guided in their weapons-making by jihadist websites.
