The Jewish Press notes with sadness the passing, at age 97, of Chacham Shaul Kassin, the chief rabbi of Brooklyn’s Syrian community and rabbi of Congregation Shaarei Tzion, one of its leading synagogues.

He was revered for his great Torah scholarship and halachic expertise, and his influence reached across the Sephardic world. Chacham Kassin was the son of Chacham Yaakov Kassin and the brother-in-law of Chacham Baruch Ben Haim, both of whom served as chief rabbi of the Syrian community.
