Some time ago, a veteran, prominently Orthodox Jewish, New York State civil servant was alleged to have misused the reimbursement process in connection with living expenses for his Albany stays. Although the claims against him were none too clear, an investigation was  triggered and the matter seemed moving towards a reasonable disposition. However, it now appears that both the Pataki Administration and the Office of Attorney General Elliot Spitzer are doggedly pursuing the matter even though their initial legal theory apparently did not pan out.

We are troubled by the differing treatment accorded to a black Brooklyn member of the New York State Assembly who reportedly put in for reimbursement for travel related expenses to Albany that were never incurred. Yet, after that matter was widely publicized, it was simply dropped and is on no law enforcement radar screen.

More next time.
