We welcome the news that the final 2014-15 New York State budget includes nearly $3 million in funding for infertility services and programs. The issue of affordable infertility treatment has long been one of particular importance to the Orthodox Jewish community and we support the leadership of New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who again successfully championed this significant cause.

In the past, Mr. Silver and the Assembly were responsible for legislation ensuring that certain fertility drugs could be obtained from local retail pharmacists rather than strictly through mail order pharmacies. Prior to that, the Assembly enacted legislation requiring insurers to include diagnostic testing and treatment for infertility in health care policies.

In a statement, Speaker Silver said, “No couple should have to choose between starting a family and mortgaging their future. Securing these funds for infertility treatment is a victory for compassion.”
