Jewish Press Endorsements – November 6 General Elections
Latest update: November 2nd, 2012
U.S. President
Last week we urged readers to support Governor Mitt Romney for president. Essentially we argued that Mr. Romney seems to be someone who can be relied on to nurture and enhance the special, decades-old U.S.-Israel relationship.
On the other hand, once freed from the dynamic of the American electoral process, President Obama, we fear, could well revert to his original stated position that “When there is no daylight [between the U.S. and Israel]…that erodes our credibility with the Arab world.”
For that reason, and because of the continued weak state of our economy, Mr. Romney is the preferred candidate.
U.S. Senate
In the race for the Senate in Massachusetts, we endorse Scott Brown (R) for reelection. He is a stalwart supporter of Israel and distinguished himself with regard to the Goldstone Report, calling attention to the deplorable human rights records of Israel’s enemies and urging severe and effective sanctions against Iran. In the Senate race in Wisconsin we support former governor Tommy Thompson (R). Thompson has long been vocal about his support of the Jewish state and has called for serious sanctions against Iran in order to thwart its nuclear program. Meanwhile, Thompson’s opponent voted as a congresswoman against the four major sanctions-expansion bills from 2006 to 2011. In the Ohio Senate race we endorse Josh Mandel (R), who in his currently position as state treasurer authored a law providing for the divestment of state pension funds from companies doing business with Iran and has been vocal in his support for an undivided Jerusalem and the right of Jews to build homes anywhere in that city.
U.S. House of Representatives (NY)
Grace Meng, 6th CD (Queens) deserves the support of Jewish voters. She is a vocal proponent of a strong Israel and will be a reliable friend in Washington. Though she is not prepared to completely dismiss President Obama’s record on Israel, she straightforwardly says he could have done more and been a better friend to the Jewish state and that she has problems with his “’67 lines” formulation. Hakeem Jeffries, 8th CD (Brooklyn, parts of Queens), in his interview with The Jewish Press editorial board, displayed a deep interest in foreign affairs and a keen understanding of Israel’s need for an undivided Jerusalem as its capital and why a return to the ’67 lines is not an option. He would be a valuable asset in Congress. Yvette D. Clarke, 9th CD (Brooklyn), has developed her views on the Middle East and has become a stalwart voice for accommodating Israel’s needs in Congress. Jerry Nadler, 10th CD (parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan) has always been there for Israel and the special needs of the Jewish community and is an important congressional presence. Elliot Engel, 16th CD (Bronx) has always been a staunch and key advocate in Congress for Israel and the Jewish community. In the congressional race in the 9th CD (Englewood, NJ) Rabbi Shmuley Boteach gets our support. Though he has gained notoriety as a celebrity rabbi, he possesses a formidable intellect and a deep grasp of a wide range of issues. There can be no doubt that when it will come to dealing with matters of concern to our community, he will be there for us.
New York State Assembly
Assemblyman Peter Abbate, 49th AD (Brooklyn), has delivered crucial services to the Jewish community in his district, including funding for senior centers and social services organizations. He has also been a leading advocate for giving rabbinical students access to the Tuition Assistance Program and has received an Outstanding Legislator award from the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty. Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, 46th AD (Brooklyn), has more than earned reelection. He is the first Russian immigrant to serve in the Assembly and has been a great friend to the Jewish community in his district, helping to found the Council of Jewish Émigré Community Organizations, which has been a crucial resource for immigrant families. He has also supported programs that have lowered the cost of prescription drugs and helped toughen penalties for criminals who victimize the elderly. Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, 45th AD (Brooklyn), has long been a strong voice for us and a staunch advocate for Jewish social service organizations that provide legal and financial services and help feed the hungry. The son of survivors, he has been a leader in educating children about the horrors of the Holocaust and has been a great friend to survivors and their families. Assemblyman Charles Lavine, 13th AD (Nassau County), is president of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Jewish Legislators. He has been a great friend to the Jewish community in his district and across the state on a variety of issues. A strong supporter of Israel, he helped lead the fight to pass New York’s Iran divestment law. Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, 37th AD (Queens), is the chair of the Assembly’s Education Committee and is one of the state’s leading advocates for children, the elderly and the infirm.

The Jewish Press has the right to make its endorsements, and I respect them. I do not agree with the choice of Mitt Romney for President, and here are the successes that are leading me to vote for Barack Obama. First, for foreign policy:
1) OBL dead.
2) 13 other Al Qaeda leaders dead. The rest are in hiding or on the run and the “organization” has pretty much ceased to function. Note that in 2008 both Romney and McCain explictly opposed the policy of going after terrorist targets without the permission of the government of the country in which they were hiding.
3) Ghadafi dead.
4) Pro-American government in Libya. And while the murders of the four Americans is a tragedy, we have to remember that the number of casualties up to that point was zero. Compare to what it took in money and lives to get rid of Saddam Hussein.
5) Pro-American CITIZENRY in Libya — that is a miracle, as for decades the ONLY Arab country whose citizens were more favorable than unfavorable to the US was Lebanon.
5) US combat forces out of Iraq.
6) Strategic arms treaty with Russia.
7, 8, 9) Free trade agreements with Columbia, Panama, and South Korea. The latter is particularly important given its history of protectionism.
10) US-Israel military cooperation at highest levels in history.
11) No Palestinian UN membership.
12) Greek debt crisis contained. (This is probably the biggest one of all.)
13) Mexican warlord terror stays on other side of the border. (Juarez had 3000 murders last year. El Paso had five.)
14) US is now a net EXPORTER of petroleum products for the first time since 1949!
15) Dollar strong against all major currencies. (It would actually help the US if it were to return to 2008 levels.)
16) Iran faces the most draconian economic sanctions any country has faced in peacetime, ever.
And for domestic policy:
1) Economic stimulus plan ended recession in 2009.
2) Affordable Care Act finally guarantees health insurance to all Americans. The effort to do this started a century ago with Theodore Roosevelt.
3) Dodd-Frank Act finally puts some sense into financial sector regulation.
I will not take time to criticize Mitt Romney right now, as there has already been too much negativity in this election. But based on his successes, Barack Obama deserves re-election.
Shaila- can you take the Jewish Press into the bathroom?
Answer – can you take the Jewish Press out of the bathroom?
If you hadn’t already decided to support Obama three years ago, I’d attach more weight to your endorsement. You don’t seem objective when it comes to politics. I, in all honesty, am still undecided (and running out of time) because I am non-partisan and dissatisfied with both candidates. At the end of the day, almost nothing on your list of accomplishments has ANYTHING directly to do with the President, especially the killing of OBL, etc.
“almost nothing on your list of accomplishments has ANYTHING directly to do with the President, especially the killing of OBL, etc.”
To the contrary, rabbi, the President has a huge amount to do with all these. As an example, please see what I wrote:
“Note that in 2008 both Romney and McCain explictly opposed the policy of going after terrorist targets without the permission of the government of the country in which they were hiding.”
Under the Romney/McCain policy, OBL would still be alive in Pakistan.
Another example is that the overthrow of Ghadafi would not have been possible without the No-Fly zone enforced by the US, UK, and France. Obama made the decision to participate.
Another example is that Romney would have vetoed both the Affordable Care Act and the Dodd-Frank Act.
I could go on, but I hope my point is made.
Rabbi, I used to be a conservative, and was for McCain 3 years ago. Look at the facts: Charlie is right, and actually Obama prioritized going after bin Laden after getting into office.
Obamas gotta go
Rabbi, If you do not think President Obama was responsible for killing OBL who do you think was responsible? george bush, willard, ryan, mccain, mcconnell, boehner, cantor?
It was President Obama who ordered the military to find him. When they found him, it was President Obama who gave the order to “get him” He was responsible!

Willard is an immoral liar who is opposed to civil rights. He doesn’t deserve any votes — especially Jewish votes.
He still believes it is OK to baptize dead Jews into the mormon religion!

I support the indorsements above, obviously I do not know many of the people mentioned. I do know and have met Romney (worked for him at the SLC Olympics – he took a disaster and turned it into the most successful Winter Olympics) and Scott Brown – a good man and a great veteran (more than 32 years with the National Guard with at least one tour in Afghanistan).

There is no way I will vote for Romney. His economic policy is likely to bring back the recession because it is similar to Bush’s regressive policies. We need more government stimuli and a President who will lead us to greater economic equality. The regressive Republican policies are precisely what ruined our economy. We are in a moderately strong recovery right now and I want to continue. On social issues I want a President who stands strongly for women’s rights to control their own healthcare, including reproductive choices. There is no way I would back this anti-abortion “fetus is a person” nonsense. Abortion is an important medical procedure that is in many instances life saving. Contraception should be provided to all who need it. The Republican mindset is only slightly less regressive than that of Al Queda or the Taliban.
Regarding Israel, Obama has given Israel strong support. It is difficult to think of any reasonable thing he has denied Israel. Obama has been a good President and he deserves re-election.

For 17 years that I lived in Monsey, I read weekly articles from Elliot Engle. Every one of them consisted of bitterly partisan, misinformation, & extremest liberal rhetoric. The editors of the Jewish Press have done their readers a terrible disservice by endorsing this truly evil man. Support for Israel is ubiquitous in congress, so it is a paltry excuse. This is a national office that should be reserved for reasonable adults, not destructive soulless individuals who know nothing but how to grow government far past a sustainable level, destroying our progeny; who knows nothing but how to lie about his opposition’s positions & philosophy, as well as about his own; & who has no idea about the many strong advantages of individual & local liberty over the idea that a few hundred people in Washington controlling every detail of our individual lives. For shame on the editors of the Jewish Press for this horrifying endorsement; shame on you.

You ultra-orthodox are a blight upon Jewry everywhere and a veritable cancer within Israel. I wish you didn’t exist.
