We were saddened to learn of Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson’s illness. He said he recently learned he has cancer and would be taking a leave of absence to fight the disease. We certainly respect his and his family’s wishes for privacy at this difficult time.

We would note that when he took office, many thought his declared focus on seeking justice for those wrongly convicted was simply a naïve campaign slogan and would divert resources needed for critical law enforcement programs.

Yet in the past two years his office has seriously addressed gun crimes and gang violence while at the same time its review of past convictions has resulted in the exoneration of 20 individuals.

We look forward to his complete recovery and return to his important work.
