How to Use a Midterm Victory

There are good reasons for Republicans to be hopeful about the 2014 midterm election.
happy elephants

There are good reasons to be hopeful about the 2014 midterm election.  The second presidential midterm election has historically been murder.  With the exceptions of Clinton in 1998 and Reagan in 1986, the president in his second midterm has lost massively in the House of Representative: FDR (-71 seats), Ike (-49 seats), Nixon (-49 seats), Bush II (-31 seats.)

Except for Clinton in 1998, each of those midterms produced losses for the president’s party in the Senate (Reagan, in fact, lost the Senate in 1986).  Senate elections are affected by the particular class of senators elected six years before as well as the sentiments of voters in the particular midterm at hand.  That is why Republican Senate losses in 1986 were so bad: Republicans defending their seats in 1986 had last faced voters in the 1980 Reagan landslide.

In 2014, the Senate class strongly favors Republicans both by the number of seats each is defending (21 Democrats to 14 Republicans) and the particular states involved, which are predominately conservative and Republican.  Sensing this, many Senate Democrats from conservative states are retiring.  The chances of Republicans taking the Senate are very good.

Winning in House races and state government elections will depend upon turnout.  Those eager airheads who have now turned out for Obama in two presidential elections will find few reasons to go to the polls in November 2014, when Obama is a lame duck and is not on the ballot.

Voter fatigue, more important than any notional polls of presidential approval or voter intentions, may well hand Republicans the sort of major victory that has been the norm in a president’s second midterm.  The growing sense of unease, even among the otherwise docile establishment media, may combine into a major Republican victory in 2014, giving perhaps fifty-five or more Senate seats and perhaps 260 seats in the House (a gain of 24 seats).  If this happens, what should Republicans do?

First, Senate Republicans should very directly state that only strict constructionist jurists will be confirmed onto the federal bench.  In fact, Senate Republicans should make it clear that no radical leftists will be confirmed for any appointed to federal courts or independent regulatory agencies.  Democrats have done this for decades — just ask Robert Bork — and Republicans must do it, too.

Second, Senate Republicans ought to do what Harry Reid threatened to do:  adopt a rule which ends filibusters and always moves for cloture with fifty-one senate votes.  This would allow Republicans in Congress to actually pass bills which would be placed on Obama’s desk to sign or to veto.  Ideally, these bills should have unanimous Republican support and, perhaps, that of a few conservative Democrats as well.

Obama will never sign ever moderate conservative reforms, so the nation would see the president vetoing one bill after another, accomplishing nothing but obstruction.  Republicans ought to research these bills as they did with the Contract With America:  find out what bills appeal to Americans, and then pass those out of Congress.

Third, Republicans must conduct aggressive investigations of the myriad abuses of power by Obama and his lackeys.  The best way to do this is would be to create a Joint Congressional Special Committee composed of members of both houses of Congress and, of course, both political parties.  Those called to testify before this committee would think twice before lying or acting flippantly.  In fact, if only a few Democrats on this Joint Committee called the Obama administration to the carpet, then the political stakes could rise dramatically for Obama almost overnight.

Unless the president and his flacks behaved much more respectfully and much more seriously than they have so far — and that, of course, would involved miles of backtracking — a Contempt of Congress citation adopted by both houses with some bipartisan support would be a real possibility.

The goal should be to deny Obama: to deny him any real power to influence the judiciary and regulatory agencies, to deny him any legislative victories by compelling Obama to veto reasonable legislation supported by the American people, and to deny Obama the unmerited support of many Americans by showing him before joint congressional committees to be a mendacious and venal politician.  There is no need to try to do too much, but doing these three things is critical to turning our nation around.

  1. Dave Francis says:

Conservatives and any patriotic American has a right to send angry flak to every one of the 60 Senators and House Representatives and expose them to the resentment and irritation of not being able be heard on this significant Immigration reform that further places the citizens and legal resident in a taxpayer nightmare. Americans are spending even more on illegal aliens, asylum seekers and the families of new citizens who sponsored family members, then abandoned them and left taxpayers to cover their survival costs.

It seems that the Obama administration has a hard time telling the truth, especially when it comes to the actually numbers spilling like insects over a supposedly secure single fence. Single fence you say? Well to be honest it isn’t supposed to be? The fence that was an actual act passed by Congress, was killed by both parties for reasons that are obscure? But then what can we expect from a government headed by President Obama who has done more to divide the American people than the provisional president Jefferson Davis when the South ceded from the Union in 1861.

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden met with three illegal [aliens] who have been granted deferred action legal status in the Oval Office last Tuesday. Meanwhile, Obama still refuses to meet with any border security enforcement officers about any aspect of immigration reform. We should all remember that if this bill passes in Senate and House, our democracy will break down and it will be an end to the two party political systems. The larger proportion of illegal aliens, who eventually will become citizens will bring in a new era of Democratic Socialism, free food stamps for all and a national healthcare system and incredible rise in taxes to pay for the freeloaders and spongers, who are the parasites of the working man/women.
    Immigration a numbers game.

Security along the U.S. border with Mexico is perhaps the key factor in the debate over comprehensive immigration reform. Those who believe the border is mostly secure already are more inclined to support the plan of the bipartisan Gang of Eight in the Senate — legalization first, followed by enhanced security. Those who believe the border is still far from secure are more likely to oppose the Gang of Eight's approach, insisting that heightened security measures be in place before the nation's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants are legalized. Now, a new report from the Council on Foreign Relations could have a significant effect on the conversation — and cast real doubt on whether the government's border security statistics are reliable. If the report is correct, more illegal immigrants are making it past U.S. authorities than officials say. And just as important, the report suggests it is nearly impossible to have an informed debate about border security because the government does not reveal the most basic information.

Glenn Spencer — American Border Patrol.

The National Academy of Sciences reported that DHS would not release detailed apprehension data because it would be made public.

Apprehension data are given by Border Patrol Sector – not by individual station. Much of the Yuma Sector is has been fenced and we can see the impact on apprehensions. Much of the eastern part of the Tucson Sector is fenced, but the western part is mostly open. Individual station data showed that fencing in San Diego worked — and Janet Napolitano should release individual station date for the Tucson Sector — at least. American Patrol Report — May 29.

The National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers has produced a video on UTube (NAFBPO Border Presentation” that documents conditions on the U.S. — Mexico border. Zack Taylor, a well-educated and experienced retired U.S Border Patrol Agent, narrates the 23-minute video.

The video presents irrefutable evidence of the danger of the border region and the gross negligence of our government. "I can think of no more reliable source for this kind of information than former Border Patrol Officers," said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol. "Everything I saw on this video agrees totally with my experience in studying the border problem in Arizona for the past ten years, but it’s even worse than I thought," he added.

For example, the video gives details of how illegal aliens started major fires, and how our government worked to cover up the issue. One of the fires covered is the Monument Fire in Cochise County (see this report) on the American Patrol website of May 16, 2012.

NAFBO reports that the State Department would not allow the Forest Service to tell the truth about how this devastating fire was started.

Please take the time to watch this video and remember that the entire nation is a stake.

Although the Senate Mark up is now in the past, the full Senate must have 60 votes to pass this illegal alien amnesty. We must strike while the iron is hot and millions of Americans now have a chance to bombard both U.S. Senators and Congressman/women about this outrageous G8 reform bill and stop it in its tracks? By now we all should know the Left and its advocates are well versed in able to manipulate the press, social networks, agenda negatives as the race card and so called Politically Correct terminology to engineer much of the populace with their Socialist agenda.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE GETTING SOFT AND SEEM NOT TO CARE ABOUT WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS? We must do the same otherwise all is lost? They will be phoning, faxing and getting in the face of politicians in their office, so we must do the same by phoning Washington switchboard at toll-free t 1-888-978-3094? Every day are adding even more dollars to support not only foreigners, but the deeper depth of deadbeats who according to Washington is nearly half of the working people. Look to NumbersUSA and American Patrol for more help to learn more. Do not pass the buck to others and start doing your part now.

There are good reasons for Republicans to be hopeful about the 2014 midterm election.

Eric Cantor is being vetted by John McCain for the vice presidential slot. Congressman Cantor may very well be the best possible Republican to run with McCain – for several reasons.
