Letters To The Editor

13 Sivan 5763 – June 13, 2003
Beyond The PaleI resent the language used by columnist Emanuel Winston in last week's Jewish Press. However one feels about the so-called 'road map'...

Fifty-Five And Counting: Israel’s Uncertain Birthday

Israel celebrated its 55th birthday last week. The good news is that five years ago it did not look like it was going to make it to 55. The bad news is that 60 is still in doubt, 65 even more so.

Joe Lieberman: A Plug For Religious Accommodation

We were sharply critical of 2000 Vice Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman over a variety of issues. And we expect that we will have a lot to say about him in the coming months as he pursues the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination. Hopefully, he will draw more positive comment from us this time around as he runs on his own and not as second banana.

The Jayson Blair Affair: A Perspective

It now appears that The Times is finally 'fessing up to the
most outrageous abuses by one of its reporters and is
conducting an investigation into the full scope of Jayson
Blair's misleading of its readers. From what is already known,
for a period of four years, Blair fabricated news stories. But
what is intriguing is that some higher-ups at The Times
apparently were aware of Blair's wrongdoing, but for reasons
not yet clear ? he was not discharged. Some are suggesting
that notions of "affirmative action" (Blair is African-
American), were in play in Blair's being hired and not let go.

The Jewish Week And Allegations Of Abuse

The Jewish Press' continuing coverage, in our Family Matters section, of students' claims of abuse at the hands of unidentified teachers in our yeshivos, attests to the significance we attach to the problem. Yet we are constrained to note our serious reservations about how the issue has been treated in The Jewish Week.

Stunning Departure

As Secretary of State Powell continues in efforts to promote the so-called Middle East "Road Map," the Bush administration's apparent departure from the firm, uncompromising anti-terror American resolve President Bush articulated on June 24th last year and re-enforced byOperation Iraqi Freedom, is nothing short of stunning.

Anti-McCarthy McCarthyism

11 Sivan 5763 – June 11, 2003
Joe McCarthy was in the news last week, and once again the Monitor took due note of the fact that the late senator from Wisconsin - certainly when compared with his more hystericalcritics - was a mere piker in the fine art of innuendo and allegation.

Worry Not, My Child

6 Sivan 5763 – June 6, 2003
Your voice - raised to Heaven as it cries out for your exiled children while beseeching for those who have returned - causes me to shake and shiver in the urgency of the current matter.

Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss

There is something strange about an individual carrying two different names - I'm sorry, but it casts aspersion on one's character.

Holocaust Reparations And German Selectivity

Military conflicts always lead to casualties, and compensation is not always demanded.

Lemrick Nelson’s Admission In Perspective

As obscene as Lemrick Nelson's admission that he killed Yankel Rosenbaum most certainly is, what it says about how our criminal justice system is failing the Jewish community willperhaps be more enduring. In dramatic fashion, by highlighting the truth of something a jury in 1992 declined to acknowledge despite overwhelming evidence, it underscores something thatshould have been apparent for more than a decade. While crimes against victims who happen to be Jewish may not regularly go unpunished, the high profile, notorious ones, those whichhighlight the Jewishness of the victim, are a different matter altogether.

Israel Has More Than Earned The Right To Go Second

It was not for nothing that last June, President Bush declared that for any progress towards Palestinian goals, there must be a "new and different Palestinian leadership ... not compromised by terror." Plainly the President had enough of Arafat's duplicitousness and deceit.

1) Another Zionist Crime, And 2) A “Well, Duh” Moment

1. I just know you are going to be outraged by this violation of the human rights of Arabs by Jews and will want to demand a full investigation and indictment of the guilty. Such things are simply intolerable in a civilized country. They violate the Road Map and the very Osloid foundations of Ariel Sharon's new government.

55 Years Since 1948

There are many things that come to mind as Israel marks 55 years since it won its independence in 1948. If nothing else, Israel has demonstrated that Jews, given even less than half a chance, can collectively rise to the very peak of human achievement. We Jews have always contributed to mankind in much greater proportion than our numbers would suggest, wherever we found ourselves. But it is in Israel, where Jews have organized a state, which after a mere 55 years, has fostered wondrous achievements in virtually all areas of humanendeavor, that what we are capable of is so obvious.

Editor's Note: This week the entire Letters section is devoted to comments on Shlomo Mostofsky's April 25 front-page essay, "Modern Orthodoxy in a Changing...

Lies, More Lies, and CNN’s Lies

6 Sivan 5763 – June 5, 2003
In the past these people were able to hide behind the cloak of time and distance in order to make their distortions sound plausible.

Former Colleague Drops Bomb On ‘Palestine Pete’ Jennings

4 Sivan 5763 – June 4, 2003
Cybercast News Service (CNSNews.com) reported this week that Peter Jennings actively shaped news coverage in the 1980's so that a communist dictatorship could be portrayed in a more flattering light.

Long Live Arafat!

29 Iyyar 5763 – May 31, 2003
Arafat's surprising decision to turn down Barak's suicidal offer came as a relief to many people who were desperately scrutinizing these closed-door events.

Give Us A Doer, Not A Talker

"He is not a great scholar (in other words he is still in high school at the age of 38) -- but what a talker he is! He could sell you anything, whether you want to buy it or not."

Daring To Tell The Truth

Yet the Jewish establishment seems willing to turn the other cheek and not register the kind of protest that should be strong and virtually automatic.
