“How do other authorities deal with the Tosefta?” asked Yisrael. “It seems pretty explicit!”

“The Rashba writes that the Tosefta’s version is inaccurate and should read, ‘the eve of Rosh Hashanah of [motzaei] shevi’is,” answered Rabbi Dayan. “Some manuscripts, in fact, have this version.”

“What is the bottom line?” asked Mr. Silver. “Should I bother drafting a pruzbul this year?”

“The common practice is to follow the majority of authorities and draft the pruzbul only toward the end of shemittah, in 5775″ replied Rabbi Dayan. “The Chazon Ish and Rav S.Z. Auerbach, zt”l, acted so. However, some are meticulous to prepare a pruzbul also before the shemittah year, in 5774, in deference to the opinion of the Rosh and his version.” (See Pischei Teshuvah 67:5; Shemittas Kesafim U’pruzbul, by Rav Zvi Cohen, 12:17, 32-34.)
