For Jews in the Diaspora considering making aliyah, moving to Israel, one’s attitude can be, “we cannot ascend” or, that of “we shall surely ascend.” Some of the happiest people I know are young families who have moved halfway across the world, out of their big beautiful homes to live in small apartments, here in Israel. That is not to say that their lives are not without challenges, but they are happy because they feel they are a part of the Jewish History and Destiny playing itself out on the stage of the modern State of Israel. Their lives here are filled with meaning and purpose.

One can choose to see the State of Israel, with its many challenges, as a “land that devours its inhabitants,” or, a land that is “very, very good.” Life is about perspective, and you get to make the choice.
