Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman met with IDF Chief Rabbi Eyal Karim on Monday and granted him authorization to sell all of the IDF’s Chametz to a non-Jew for Passover.
Liberman said, “At the traditional ceremony at my office in the Kirya [IDF Headquarters in Tel Aviv], I granted the IDF chief rabbi, this evening, General Rabbi Eyal Karim, the authorization to sell to a gentile all the Chametz of the IDF and security organizations. In my name and in the name of all the commanders and soldiers of the IDF, I wish a happy, kosher and quiet Pesach to the entire house of Israel.”
On the Passover holiday, it is forbidden for Jews to own or have in their possession leavened bread or food mixed with leaven (aka Chametz). It has become part of Jewish tradition, to sell any Chametz that is not destroyed, to a non-Jew. This is legally binding sale, and the non-Jew can claim the Chametz he has purchased.
