Here’s President Barack Obama walking across the intersection at 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., after grabbing lunch at a nearby sandwich shop, Oct. 4, 2013.

The president then found a bench in a nearby park, sat down, pealed his sandwich and ate quietly, looking at the town around him. You could hardly tell the U.S. government, that multi-trillion dollar organization that runs everything, was out of commission. The sun was out, tourists snapped their shots, some kids even recognized the president and waved to him hesitatingly. They didn’t know if he was still the leader of the free world, seeing as his government had been shut down.

The president sighed.

He then threw the empty sandwich bag in a trash bin and returned to his errands. He picked up the cleanings, walked over to the bakery, took a number and waited his turn patiently. He got scones for Michelle and the girls, and two Challahs for the Lews. Jack asked for them, should the president hit the bakery, since he, Jack, was busy, and the president was, basically, free.

The president sighed again and took out his list. Still needed to walk the dog before the girls come home from school.
