Gazans ripped down part of the security fence on Friday, setting it on fire and crossing over to the other side. They then met up with some actual resistance in the form of an IDF Merkava 4 tank that fired smoke rounds and sent the infiltrators scurrying back to the other side.

A well-aimed shell might have provided more effective long-term deterrence than a smoke round.
