Actress Mary Tyler Moore has died at the age of 80, her publicist announced Wednesday (Jan. 25), with her husband and friends close by.

Born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Moore was married three times. She was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 33 and later wrote two memoirs. Moore bravely shared with the world her struggle as a recovering alcoholic, and became an international spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also underwent several laser surgeries to treat her vision problems and brain surgery to remove a benign tumor in 2011.

The actress was best known for her portrayal of Laura Petrie, the wife on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in the 1960s, and for her own show in the following decade, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
