Ambassador Howard Gutman at Center of Prostitution Scandal

By: JTA

The U.S. ambassador alleged in State Department memos to have solicited prostitutes, including minors, was embroiled two years ago in a controversy over Israel.

A whistleblower who worked for the State Department’s Inspector General office claimed that higher-ups quashed an investigation into Howard Gutman, the U.S. ambassador to Brussels, the New York Post reported on Tuesday. Some of the findings were first reported by CBS.

An agent for the department’s Bureau of Security “began his investigation and had determined that the ambassador routinely ditched his protective security detail in order to solicit sexual favors from both prostitutes and minor children,” said an internal memo by Aurelia Fedenisn, the Post reported.

Gutman, the son of a Holocaust survivor, said in 2011 that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict contributes to manifestations of Muslim anti-Semitism in Europe, prompting calls for his ouster by Republican candidates for the presidency.

Gutman, who is popular in Belgium, is a lawyer who was a fundraiser for President Obama’s 2008 campaign. Appointing supporters to key overseas embassies is routine among U.S. presidents.

  1. Gutman's case plus those of accused pedophiles, Sylvain Kustyan, Ariel Castro, Jerry Sandusky show the pressing need to stop them BEFORE they have years to prey on innocent children. Castro and Sandusky are behind bars, but Kustyan (formally charged with two counts each of 1st Degree Sodomy and Sexual Abuse of a ten-year-old little boy) fled the US and is now a fugitive from the law. Kustyan, formerly of Tuscaloosa, AL and France is thought to be in Europe. As the recidivism rate among pedophiles is virtually 100% they must be caught ASAP. Enablers (apparently the State Dept. in Gutman's case) should be held just as accountable as the predators themselves!

  2. Michael Loewinger says:

That only applies if the accusations are in fact true. I have known Howard Gutman for thirty years. I have disagreed with him politically, but he has always been scrupulously honest in every way, and of high character. From what I know of him, there is no way he did what he was accused of. I have no doubt that it was some disgruntled employee who accused him and that the reason the investigation went nowhere, was that there was nothing for them to find. If you don't trust my appraisal of his character, how about his intelligence? Howard was a top criminal defense attorney in Washington for 25 years seeing every way a rich or famous person could screw up, think they were cleverly getting out of it and then get caught. So now, once HE is actually famous supposedly he picked up prostitutes in a public park near his embassy where probably everyone knows him? It's absurd. There is no way he would be that stupid.

  3. Cody Flecker says:

Unfortunately, over 70% of the eligible Jewish voters voted for a known anti semite, could all of those Jews be that stupid.?

  4. Arthur Honig says:

Cody Flecker Yes, they voted for him twice.
