John Demjanjuk, the retired US autoworker who was convicted of being a guard at the Nazis’ Sobibor death camp died Saturday at 91, his son told The AP.

After close to 30 years of claiming his was a case of mistaken identity, Demjanjuk was convicted last May of 28,060 counts of being an accessory to murder and sentenced to five years in prison. Still, he ended up dying in a nursing home in the Bavarian town of Bad Feilnbach, after having been released from prison pending yet another appeal.

Demjanjuk had terminal bone marrow disease, chronic kidney disease and other ailments, and the exact cause of his death was still being determined.
