At least 32 people were injured, one seriously, in an accident along Route 4 in East Greenwich, R.I., that involved a bus bring Jewish school children home from a field trip.

A spokesman for Providence Mayor Angel Taveras tells WPRI-TV the city recreation bus involved in the accident was carrying Jewish Community Day School students on a trip to Newport.

Police told the Associated Press on Monday that 32 people received medical attention after the 3:30 p.m. crash, which involved the school bus and an SUV, in the northbound lanes between Route 2 and Frenchtown Road. The bus rode through a guardrail and into a tree.

The deputy fire chief in North Kingstown told the AP the bus driver is in Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.
