In another sign of ratcheting tensions between the United States and Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has threatened to “review” the Camp David Accord with Israel if the US follows through on its threat to cut aid to Egypt.

“We (Egypt) are a party (to the treaty) and we will be harmed so it is our right to review the matter,” Essam el-Erian, deputy leader of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), told Reuters.

Obama administration officials and US Congressman have suggested that the $2 billion in yearly military and economic aid to Egypt has been jeopardized by the Egyptian government’s clampdown and prosecution of pro-democracy groups and individuals.

Although the FJP has not assumed power in post-Mubarak Egypt, it has already won almost half the seats in the newly elected parliament, making it the most influential force in Egyptian politics.

Another FJP leader, Mohamed Mursi, intoned ambiguously: “We want the march of peace to continue in a way that serves the interest of the Egyptian people.”
