Liberal opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in on Sunday as Egypt’s vice president—incharge of international relations, Egypt’s official news agency MENA reported.

ElBaradei was nominated last week as prime minister in the transitional period, but he could not get his appointment past his Islamist opponents.

ElBaradei served as director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1997 to 2009 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 jointly with the IAEA. He will be remembered as the UN official who enabled the Iranians to continue their efforts to produce their own weapon grade plutonium while he was reporting that there was no evidence to such efforts.

The same announcement also said that former Egyptian ambassador to Washington Nabil Fahmy has accepted the post of interim foreign minister.

The cabinet line-up is expected to be announced Tuesday.
