Berlin became the first of Germany’s 16 states to declare circumcision legal, following a Cologne court ruling in June that non-medical circumcisions on children amounted to a criminal offense, according to the German news agency DPA. National legislation is pending to legalize circumcision.

But, the state of Berlin has authorized only doctors, and not mohels, to perform circumcisions; the national legislation could authorize mohels. The state also required that parents be informed of the procedure’s medical risks before consenting, and that doctors do everything possible during the procedure to reduce pain and limit bleeding.

June’s court ruling has led many doctors to stop performing circumcisions in order to avoid being prosecuted. Two rabbis have had complaints brought against them based on the ruling, though one complaint was dropped last week.

  1. A slippery slope here. Europe seems hell bent on either eliminating or deciding a secular approval is required for rites of passage in religious matters or other dogma such as kosher slaughter. A truly religious person of any faith follows secular laws for sure, but the divine always takes precedence. Asking a religious person to choose is unconscionable. First this nonsense, then the authorities will be arresting Rabbis for preaching non-politically correct speech. It happened in Sweden with a gentile minister who did not approve of homosexuality. He was in jail for months. Europe is an evil religious people of ALL walks must forever be on guard from.

  2. To warn Jews about how to, and what to, re a bris!___? Hey, what's going on here? Some one HAS lost their marbles! After 5000 years some has to tell Jews how to do a bris is probably the craziest thing I have ever heard. if it was a nutter I could maybe understand, but from a learned(?) law man from Germany? Some body put something in his Beer!
