Haifa is known for its multi-religious population, with several Jewish, Muslim and Christian neighborhoods existing in close proximity. The shrine and world center of the Bahá’í faith is also located in Haifa.

Though Yom Kippur for Jews is a solemn day of fasting and prayer, Christians celebrate the Feast of the Cross with parades, fireworks, and carnivals. Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav met with Archbishop Elias Chacour about Yom Kippur and the Feast of the Cross falling on the same day, and Christian leaders are also coordinating with Haifa police to maintain security during both religious observances.

  1. But Jewish holy days may upset Christians if they’re reminded how we killed Jesus. Better cancel Yom Kippur. Right?

  2. Tim Upham says:

There is no reason for conflict, both holidays can be accommodated. Unless it is going to be morons on the streets, say "What I am is better."

  3. Yechiel Baum says:

Shouldn't the Eastern Orthodox be celebrating their holiday in mother Russia?

  4. Henri Korn says:

Could anyone explain why there should be a conflict? People pray in silence within their own temples.

  5. Ch Hoffman says:

It's not as bad a conflict as Thanksgiving and Chanuka on the same day – the major fight over frying the turkey or stuffing it with latkes
