Somebody on the Israeli Foreign Ministry staff in Ireland has a lot of explaining to do after sending a tweet, which since has been removed, suggesting that Hitler would be happy with the United Nations’ consistent anti-Israel policies. “It’s from 2011: The #UN has itself become a tool against #Israel. Hitler couldn’t have been made happier,” stated the tweet, which provided a link to an article with the transcript of a speech supportive of Israel and delivered by a South Sudanese human rights activist who was protesting the Durban II conference against racism.

Simon Deng, in his speech in New York in 2011, charged that the conference in Durban “is a tool of the enemies of Israel” and that “the UN has itself become a tool against Israel. For over 50 years, 82 percent of the UN General Assembly emergency meetings have been about condemning one state – Israel. Hitler couldn’t have been made happier.”

The tweet upset readers, and the Foreign Ministry quickly removed it. Trying to defend the tweet, the ministry explained there was no intention to compare Hitler with the United Nations and that the tweet simply was meant for readers to open up the linked article.
