Jewish Groups Say Michele Bachmann Endangers Religious Freedom

By: JTA

Jewish groups were among the 42 religious and secular organizations that told five members of Congress that their recent allegations of Muslim Brotherhood infiltration of the U.S. government were endangering religious freedom.

Last month, five Republican lawmakers wrote to various government agencies and asserted that among others, Huma Abedin, a deputy chief of staff for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and wife of the disgraced former House member from New York Anthony Weiner, was connected to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Cosigning the letters were Reps. Michele Bachman (R-Minn.), Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), Louie Gohmert, (R-Texas), Thomas Rooney (R-Fla.) and Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.).

“It appears that there has been deep penetration in the halls of our United States government by the Muslim Brotherhood,” Bachmann told the St. Cloud Times, a Minnesota newspaper. “It appears that there are individuals who are associated with the Muslim Brotherhood who have positions, very sensitive positions, in our Department of Justice, our Department of Homeland Security, potentially even in the National Intelligence Agency.”

The letter sent Thursday in response to the allegations was organized by the Interfaith Alliance.

“Those you accuse … have long-standing histories of positive and committed work to strengthen the United States of America. Furthermore, we take offense to the implications of your actions for the American Muslim community as a whole, as you give momentum to `guilt by association’ accusations and betray our foundational religious freedoms,” the letter read.

The response letter was signed by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Society for Humanistic Judaism. They joined the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the American Civil Liberties Union, American Baptist Churches USA and others.

Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, president of Interfaith Alliance, said that the groups signing this letter have very different ideas about faith and belief, but were united by their commitment to religious freedom.

“I hope that Rep. Bachmann and her colleagues take the time to look at the diverse coalition that has come together to challenge their actions,” Gaddy said in a statement.

  1. I'm surprised that the JP wd publish trash like this. So because a few Congressmen, incl Michele Bachmann, have the GUTS to stand up to the MusBros, they are ENDANGERING RELIGIOUS FREEDOM"? This is pure demagoguery or dementia, and unfit for a respectable news outlet like the JP. I'd expect to see this swill in an Arab or Russian news source.

  2. Ed Karesky says:

Aparently Mr. Averbuck ignored the condemnation of Bachmann by Senator John McCain and other Republican congressional leaders. They are sick and tired of Bachmann intellectually (sic) "walking on the moon" while developing her cockamamie theories. She, like Rep. West(R-Florida), seldom "name names." In this case, she "named" one woman who is highly respeted by leaders of both parties and who happens to be Muslim. Oh, and she happens to be an American as well. Bachmann? She's a Dimbo.

  3. Anonymous says:

So-called 'liberal' and 'progressive' Jews are either morons or suicidal.

  4. One ought to have more important things to attend to than continuing to focus on that benighted Congresswoman Bachmann. What's she amount to, in the final analysis, anyway?
She is her own best enemy, so let he do her dirty work by herself!

  5. Moishe Sachs says:

Weiner's entire family is part of the Muslim Brotherhood and Sisterhood and we're supposed to see nothing, hear nothing, & know nothing. But, if it was the Bush Administration, we wouldn't hear, see, or know the end of it. The outrageous hypocrisy & willful ignorance of the Left and people like McLame (God bless him for his incredibly heroic military service) regarding Islam, particularly the grandfather of most of the world's major Islamic terrorist organizations, the Muslim Brotherhood is sickening & suicidal, as can be seen by the 75 million Muslims now residing in Europe, a larger group than the largest country in Europe, Germany.
Our government, military, academia, & media are absolutely infiltrated by Islam; this is an undeniable fact, like it or not Ed Karesky. I'll take Michele Bachmann fighting for me, my family, & my country any day over you and your type who insist on equating a 1,400-yr-old genocidal political entity posing as a religion that has as its most cherished goal the turning of the entire world population into one Islamic nation. I'll take the Muslims fighting to expose Islam, to change it fundamentally to make it acceptable to civilization, any day over you and your type who are completely ignorant of the vast threat we already face in this country because of Islam. All over, particularly on college campuses, Jews are physically attacked & speakers are physically attacked. Hate-filled Muslim propaganda fills the campuses on a regular basis.
America has a president who has bent over backward so much he's going to need surgery to fix his back. He grovels at everything Islam, & we're supposed to ignore it. The hell we will! The hell we will! When the director of NASA states to an audience that the president told him that the goal of NASA is to make sure that Muslims are recognized for their achievements? What in God's green Earth is that supposed to mean? Huh? Excuse me? What? But, that is exactly what he said. Please, there are myriad examples of huge pro-Islam, anti-America, anti-Israel biases by this dubious-at-best president.

openid, there is another possibility; they are misinformed. When one has been fed lies by the same university that has also taught one math, science and other factually based subjects, one may assume the former are as trustworthy as the latter. The fault of poor or malicious teaching lies not with the students but with the teachers, and those who hired the teachers in the first place.

The Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Society for Humanistic Judaism are NOT Jewish organizations. They are self hating, Torah hating HERETICS!

  8. Bachmann is just the latest example of the homegrown fear-mongering our country has been subjected to in the decade following 9/11. These are NOT allegations to be played with in today’s society where dissidence is not being tolerated and minorities are being held without trial. As an elected official, Michelle should be leading by example not spewing her own form of politicized terrorism. You can read much more about living in this Orwellian society of fear and see my visual response to these measures on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/living-in-society-of-fear-ten-years.html We must acknowledge this type of bigotry erodes our freedoms from the inside out for ALL races of Americans.

  9. Michelle Bachman and her cosigners are extreme right wing Evangelical fanatics. But just because someone is paranoid does not mean that they are not being chased.

Israel was recently excluded from a symposium on terror. It is legitimate to ask who is advising the State Department to agree to that.

  10. Joshua Lai says:

Huma Abedin is married to the Jew Anthony Weiner. The Muslim Brotherhood would lynch her faster than they would Michelle Bachmann.

  11. Ed Karesky says:

You don't even know me. I think radical Muslims are racist and sick, the "Palestinian people" are a figment of the imagination, that Israel should integrate the whole West Bank into Israel proper, etc. etc. etc. I also think Bachmann and her ilk are phony and delusional.

They are neither phony nor delusional! Stop the malicious slander of a wonderful woman! Read this & weep. She is absolutely 100% right!
