Delegates to the Republican Convention have been pouring into Tampa for the last several days.  The delegates have been pouring in, but thus far, despite predictions that Hurricane Isaac might bring with it heavy rain and driving winds, there has been ‘nary a cloud in the sky.

Lynne Kessler Lechter  serves on the National Women’s Committee of the Republican Jewish Coalition.  Lechter told The Jewish Press that on Saturday night she attended a dinner for Republican Jewish Coalition leadership at the home of Ambassador Mel and Betty Semble.  Semble, a co-chair of the Florida Finance Committee for Mitt Romney, served as US ambassador to both Italy (2001 – 05) and Australia (1989-93).

The Academy Award-winner Jon Voight was one of the speakers at Saturday night’s dinner.  Lechter, who serves on the National Women’s Committee of the Republican Jewish Coalition, was delighted.  Voight explained to the RJC leadership that in part, his strong support for Israel was based on the fact that “his dad worked hard all his life and taught him to love and respect Jews because they have similar values.”

Marion Taxin is a delegate to the Republican Convention, representing Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District, located in suburban Philadelphia.  This will be Taxin’s second Republican Convention, having attended as an alternate in 2008.

The Jewish Press caught up with Taxin as she traveled by bus from the West Shore Doubletree Hotel on her way to the Convention site.  Although Taxin had not yet heard the news that Rabbi Meir Soloveichik was going to be giving the Convention invocation, she already knew, she said, that “Mitt Romney was truly committed to the Jewish State.”

“Josh Romney spoke to our delegation at a breakfast this morning,” said Taxin.  “He told us with such great pride that when he and his parents were recently in Israel, the response from the Israelis was incredibly enthusiastic,” she continued.

“He told us that so many people came up to him, when he was in Jerusalem, and said, ‘we need your dad, we have to have your dad win.’”  Taxin said that “Romney’s son understood that his father needs to win because Israel’s future is at stake.”

  1. Latter Day President Howard W. Hunter on the subject: “We do not need to apologize nor mitigate any of the prophecies concerning the Holy Land. We believe them and declare them to be true. But this does not give us justification to dogmatically pronounce that others of our Father’s children are not children of promise. … Both the Jews and the Arabs are children of our Father. They are both children of promise, and as a church we do not take sides. We have love for and an interest in each.” (Devotional speech BYU 1979).
Mitt Romney is conducting a violation of Mormon creed by being Israel's neo-submissive Gentile, advocating a pre-emptive strike against Iran on behalf of a fake Zion, or insisting an exclusively 'Jewish state' to be the case anywhere.

  2. Yori Yanover says:

Poor guy just wants to be elected. Can't even the Mormons cut him some slack?

  3. Edward Lobel says:

John Voight is a catholic! Using him to try to get Jews to vote for repubs would not be as good as getting say George Cloony to "woo the Jews" My wife would never attend anything because voight was there, but would run like heck to gt to George Cloony!

  4. Edward Lobel says:

You should NEVER cut a LIAR some slack!
You should NEVER cut the baptizer of deceased Jew into the Mormon faith some slack.
Willard believed in what he was doing and still believes what he did is right.
He has NEVER done anything to help a single Jew, let alone the state of Israel.
Sheldon Adeleson is giving enormous amounts of money in the hopes that wilard will win so that willard will stop the prosicution of Adeleson for the serious crime of ommercial bribery.
Willard has NEVER donated one single penny to any Jewish cause.
If he wins (g-d forbid) what makes you think he will help Israel?

  5. must be a fake catholic cuz he hangs at israel-firsters' clubhouse.

  6. Edward Lobel says:

Seriously, he was a drunk and adict and a hassidic rabbi from a chabat house somewhere in the greater L.A. area helped him get clean and sober. For that Voight has been eternally greatful. but he is indeed a catholic. If I was going to respond to a non Jew to ask Jews to help repubs and tea baggers, while I know voight's story (and extremely proud that he was helped to get clean and sober by a rabbi,) there are tons of non Jews I would much rather see and be asked for help than him.
But again, he is catholic and not Jewish!

  7. Howard Frank says:

    U guys are stupid idiots
