Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Danon was elected last night to head the Likud central committee. Minister Israel Katz was re-elected chairman of the Likud Secretariat, defeating MK Miri Regev.
Deputy minister Zeev Elkin is the new Likud bureau chief.
The Likud secretariat, which Katz has been running for the past 10 years, is comprised of the party’s Knesset faction as well as major Likud apparatchiks.
Katz was blamed by MK Regev, and by her supporter, Danny Danon, for the Likud’s decline in the last elections. They accused Katz of losing touch with the Likud voters.
Both Regev and Danon are considered to the right of Katz on issues related to Judea and Samaria. But Danon is to the left of Michael Puah, whom he defeated last night, on those same issues.
Minister Katz issued a statement saying he was committed to taking the Likud on a new path, to prepare it for victory come next elections.
