Thick black smoke from the fire can be seen for miles.

Large firefighting forces are operating at the base. There are no reports of injuries.

After many years in which the IDF was publicly criticized for maintaining its headquarters, including highly visible communication devices, in the heart of the most densely populated city in Israel–exposing thousands of civilians to a possible attack, the IDF is now in the process of moving its main high command operations to the more sparsely populated Negev in the south.
