Liberman Meets with Bennett

While Netanyahu reportedly has his hands full with Yair Lapid’s coalition demands, Avigdor Liberman met with Naftali Bennett today to discuss Bennett’s joining the coalition,  according to Avigdor Liberman’s Facebook page.

Liberman said they discussed the political options currently on the table as well as the Chareidi draft issue. They agreed to continue talking.

Bennett had previously told President Shimon Peres that his party wants to see Netanyahu as prime minister, despite the less than spectacular treatment he’s been getting from the Likud.

Netanyahu also sent his lawyers to talk with Shas.

If Lapid's demands are too much then form a narrow government with 61+ Kadima (if possible). You'd have to bribe Mofaz with Defense Minister but that may be preferable to bowing to Lapid's demands. I don't understand Bibi's goal of having a coalition of 82. A coalition of 63 may sound small but Begin had the same sized coalition in 1981, Shamir had a 62 seat coalition in 1983 and 62 in 1990. Rabin only had a 62 seat coalition when he agreed to Oslo, Peres ruled with a 58 seat coalition+ 5 Arab Seats in 1995. Bibi had 66 in 1996 and so did Sharon in 2003. Seeking an 82 seat coalition is not the norm nor does it offer much chance of taking Israel in the direction Netanyahu would prefer; it's too unwieldy. Bibi could also seek to pull away some Yesh Atid members if Lapid is too arrogant; Hei managed to get Ehud Barak to gut Labor to join the coalition in 2009 so it is possible.
