The London Sunday Times published an editorial cartoon showing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu building a wall on the bodies of Palestinians and using their blood as cement.

The cartoon published Sunday, which was International Holocaust Memorial Day, carries the caption “Israeli Elections … Will Cementing Peace Continue?”

In a statement, the European Jewish Congress called the cartoon “sickening” and “offensive,” and said the paper and cartoonist Gerald Scarfe should apologize.

“This cartoon would be offensive at any time of the year, but to publish it on International Holocaust Remembrance Day is sickening and expresses a deeply troubling mindset,” EJC President Moshe Kantor said in the statement. “This insensitivity demands an immediate apology from both the cartoonist and the paper’s editors.

“Amazingly, as this cartoon was published days after the only democracy in the Middle East, Israel, underwent fully democratic elections, as others in the Middle East were being butchered by the tens of thousands, the Sunday Times focuses its imagination solely on the Jewish State.”

HonestReporting called the cartoon “a blood libel on a day when the millions of victims of the Holocaust are remembered.”

“On any day, this cartoon’s imagery is an assault on the real victims of genocide, demeans their suffering and insults their memory,” said HonestReporting CEO Joe Hyams in a statement issued Sunday by the organization. “The Sunday Times should be mindful that what started as cartoons in the 1930′s ultimately led to violence and unspeakable tragedy.”

Scarfe also drew the cover illustration for Pink Floyd’s 1979 album “The Wall.” Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters has been a critic of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.

  1. . I have bowed out of the local interfaith Holocaust service, because it was a custom to include Hatikvah at the end, but now some Christian groups object as they support the Palestinians and the Muslim Imams would either sit or leave during the Hatikvah. Perhaps interfaith Holocaust programs no longer make sense, at least to me. I do not need the stress of seeing disrespect being afforded to Israel and nor do I wish to compromise by leaving Hatikvah out. This is a personal choice and I DO NOT ADVOCATE ANYONE NOT PARTICIPATING IN ANY INTERFAITH HOLOCAUST SERVICE. I INTRODUCED INTERFAITH HOLOCAUST SERVICES IN 1974 AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST IF NOT THE FIRST TO DO SO. This was a difficult decision for me based on personal principle. The interfaith Holocaust memorials started as well intentioned way for the Jewish people and other groups to pause and reflect on man's capacity to perpetuate unbelievable cruelty against his fellow and to commiserate as a group and others, with the Jews and hopefully prevent this nightmare from reoccurring. Over the years it was understandably modified to include other victims of genocidal mass killings, though these mass killings were not really analogous, as the Nazis were obsessed at not just killing Jews as a competing group, but Hitler desired to eliminate our creed and it's pervasive influence on humanity, particularly Christian doxy. As a result of Muslim participation and twisted liberalism, this is morphing into a twisted canard where Israel is being blamed for perpetuating ethnic killings against the Palestinians as the Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis. One can understand the Islamo-Nazis belief system with a quote from the Talmud. We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are. RABBI DR. 2. What do you want to get from England? They so hate Jewish.

It's only libel if it is false. Netanyahu has Palestinian blood on his hands, it cannot be denied.

It's only libel if it is false claim. Netanyahu has Palestinian blood on his hands, it cannot be denied. Jewish people should be more careful, if one cries libel regarding a true statement doubt will be cast on all such claims.

  5. On January 27, 1945 the death camp Auschwitz, where 1,000,000 Jews were exterminated, was liberated by the Allies.

Remember and Never Forget the Holocaust must be summed in two simple words:

    Support Israel!

The Jewish nation redemption and vindication will only come through a larger and more powerful Jewish state.

A safe, impregnable Israel, in its present borders, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, is the only true memorial to the genocide-Holocaust, where one of every three Jews in the world was exterminated.

All the rest is commentary and bad theatre. rabbi dr. bernhard rosenberg

  6. Ron Dolinsky says:

Wait a minit … wait a minit! So Scarfe is not anti-Semitic. But he didn't say that his cartoon wasn't, did he? And he says that he was just trying to depict Netanyahu as a bad man,. How would Scarfe like somebody expressing their displeasure with him by having a cartoon of Scarfe nailed to a cross with a copy of the Netanyahu cartoon beneath his feet? It’s just symbolic, isn’t it? Or how would the Anglicans feel if somebody had created a cartoon of Jesus holding the severed head of Mohammed? Or how would Muslims feel about that Jesus/Mohammed cartoon? As with everything, people are defined by their boundaries. Does Scarfe actually believe the blood libels thrown at the feet of Jews for centuries to justify their annihilation? If he does, then he should say so. If not, why draw it?

Somebody needs to ask the spokesperson for the Times if they believe that any form of journalism that incites terrorists is acceptable. And somebody needs to ask Rupert Murdoch who he has fired, if he thinks this cartoon is so grotesque and offensive. Nobody fired? So, not that grotesque, eh, Rupert? This whole saga is nothing more than a nasty, cynical charade.

  7. RABBI DR. BERNHARD ROSENBERG will not attend and boycott if Imam sits during hatikvah.

Organizers to vote on restoring ‘Hatikva’ to interfaith program.
