At least 20 people were injured Thursday when a gunman opened fire in a theater in Viernham, Germany, and then barricaded himself in the building, taking hostages while doing so.

Police moved fast to respond to the attack, shooting and killing the gunman after firing tear gas into the Viernham Cinema Complex.

Most of the injuries came as a result of the tear gas, sources said. The gunman was shot dead by police, Reuters reported.
