Spanish Muslims urged their government to grant citizenship to descendants of Muslims who were expelled from Spain in addition to Jews.

The demand was made this week in a statement by the Association for Historical Legacy of Al-Andalus, the Spanish news agency EFE reported on Feb. 17.

“The Spanish state should grant the same rights to all those who were expelled, otherwise their decision is selective, if not racist,” Bayi Loubaris, the association’s president, told EFE.

The association named several families currently residing in North Africa as candidates for receiving Spanish citizenship.

Several other prominent Muslims and legal experts accused the Spanish government of pursuing a double standard following the approval on Feb. 10 of a bill proposing to naturalize descendants of Sephardic Jews, which the governments said was to atone for the expulsions 500 years ago.

Submitted by Spain’s Justice Minister, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, the bill is expected to go up to a vote in Spanish congress this year. Portugal already passed a law granting citizenship to descendants last year and its interior ministry is currently drafting regulations ahead of the law’s application, according to Portuguese lawmakers who submitted the bill.

The Jews were persecuted in Spain and Portugal during the Inquisition which the Catholic Church and royal houses of both countries led against non-Christians in the 15th and 16th centuries.

“Recognition of the Sephardic community is symbolic, necessary and just. The same applies to those who have kept their Andalus-Moorish identity in exile,” Manuel Antonio Rodríguez, a professor of law at the University of Cordoba, told the El Confidencial daily on Sunday.

In 2006, the United Left party in the parliament of the autonomous Spanish region of Andalusia submitted a bill which proposed recognizing the rights of descendants of Muslims who were expelled but the bill never made it to a vote.

Portuguese lawmakers who drafted the country’s law on Sephardic Jews rejected calls to naturalize the descendants of Muslims who were expelled, citing the fact that the expulsion of the Muslims was part of a war to end the occupation of Spain by North African invaders.

“Persecution of Jews was just that, while what happened with the Arabs was part of a conflict,” Jose Ribeiro e Castro, a Spanish lawmaker who drafted Portugal’s law of return, said. ”There’s no basis for comparison.”

Y ahora los Musulmanes estan demandando al gobierno español que aplique también a ellos una ley de retorno de los musulmanes expulsados en España, nada mas que los musulmanes fueron expulsados por conflictos no por persecusión religiosa….nada que ver..

When are the Moslem nations going to restore all material assets stolen from Jew's with the re-birth of Israel $30b, I believe.

  4. Edward Lobel says:

It has always amazed me when someone simply does not believe the truth, even when that truth is well known and accepted. You take the truth and try to bend it into something that it is not.

The Jews were persecuted for no other reason than the were Jews! You are simply choosing to forget that the Muslims waged war and ultimately lost. There is a real big difference between throwing a peace loving group of people out of your country and licking your enemy, who attacked you out and hoping they will never return.

  5. Edward Lobel, he knows and believes the truth. He knows the difference between conquerors/invaders and victims/vanquished. He knows all about the various conquests from Spain to India. He'll tell us how they were good conquerors that were kind to slaves and quick to slay their enemies.

And before he brings it up again, the Crusaders were wrong, Christians who kill and torture people are wrong, and white men who killed and enslaved people are wrong. If Muslims or Arabs do any of that, they're just as wrong too though. We need to wake up and realize that Christians haven't been the only jerks in world history.

  6. Richard Trank says:

Not not nearly hippocritical as a Pakistani ex-pat that publicaly claims to be a victim of anti-semetism, Mr Siddiqui.

.As for "Jerks": I'm sorry you feel the Christians and Jews are giving you so much competion
    .
Oh yes. Your ad hominem attack on Mr Lobel is no substitue for a educated respone, Nor does it negate History> Your Muslim brothers attacked Spain, a Christian Place as was the HolyLand before the Muslim Crusaders came to Islamize it. They took it over for a while then got kicked back to Africa.

  7. Edward Lobel says:

Richard Trank, If you ever speak to me again I would prefer you simply call me Ed.

Thanks for confirming what I said. Roasted Locust simply does not accept the truth and is one of those people who will always try to bend the truth in his favor.

  8. Edward Lobel says:

Roasted Locust You may be correct when you say the Christians invaded "the holy land" and waged war. They lost and retreated. To imply that Muslims should be equated the same as the Jews of Spain and Portugal is completely false!
They waged war won and settled in. When they were finally thrown out, they were cast out as invaders. That is a far cey from how the Jews were treated.

People like you simply do not accept the truth and will try to bend any argument in our direction no matter how wrong you are!

  9. As defeated invaders and a warring party there seems that the expulsion was preferable to the other alternative of just killing the enemy combatants out right. It has always been the rule of war that when to try to invade a country or region and are defeated you the looser and invader are either put to death or run out of the area and told never to return. To even try to equate the situation of the resident Jewish people to that of the invading and loosing muslim ones is almost an ignorant assumption. It takes a real stretch of the honesty and truth to even entertain a thought on this line. .The Jewish people are just having a right restored while the muslims are asking to be rewarded for trying to conquer a country and losing, very similar to the current Palestinian problem, where the nation starting a war of destruction trying to kill all the countries people and take their land and property is defeated and then wants to be given back everything that they lost trying to destroy someone else. Make no sense at all. It is the price that is paid for aggression and greed. The Jewish people should and will have their rights restored as is right.

  10. Richard Trank says:

    >Far too many are using the current international Anti-Muslim climate by Muslim-Bashing to further their own and populist bigotries.<

Far worse is projecting bigotry and Muslim-Bashing where it doesnt exist.
    .
Populists are well aware that Since 1492 (or before 1492 for that matter) No Jews have bombed Madrid lately.

  11. Edward Lobel, I was agreeing with you. Jewish immigrants in any country are not in the same class as Muslim invaders or any other group of conquerors. When I brought up the crusaders and christians, I was referring to Jeff Siddiqui's comments about how Americans should leave America because of our conquest against the natives to give his argument support. Nobody should expect the Cherokee nation to accept us as honorary members just as Spain shouldn't be expected to reward descendants of Muslim invaders with citizenship.

Sorry for the not being clear. I wasn't trying to bend the truth. I just didn't form my words clear enough.

  12. Edward Lobel says:

Roasted Locust, sorry if I misunderstood you comment, now that you have made it clear as to what you are saying, I agree with you.

  13. Edward Lobel, it's my fault for not being clear or addressing Jeff's comment directly. Without "Jeff" as the antecedent, the "he" in my opening sentence may have been seen as reference to you. I was trying to say that Jeff Siddiqui actually knows the truth, because it should be easy to understand the difference between persecuted people and vanquished conquerors.

I've never seen an instance where I would disagree with you, btw, and I've seen you set quite a few people straight on a few political issues and the mudslinging that comes with it. Can't say I'll always agree with you, but I respect how you stand up to untruths wherever they are.

  14. Edward Lobel says:

Thanks, I appreciate and fully understand and gladly accept you comments, thanks again, Ed
