Prime Minister Netanyahu says his proposal to enshrine Israel’s status as a Jewish country should include a provision establishing the Talmud as the basis of Israeli law.

“I want to anchor provisions into this basic law to ensure that the State of Israel was created and exists on a foundation of the Torah and of Jewish tradition,” the prime minister told Yaakov Vider, a haredi member of the Likud party presidium.

The comment was published by the haredi Kikar Hashabbat website following the Likud Central Committee meeting Wednesday night.
