The Judicial Selection Committee failed to select any new judges for the Supreme Court yesterday after the three judges sitting on the committee blocked any decision.

Dorit Beinish, President of the Supreme Court, Judge Grunis and Judge Naor claimed various reasons for their demand for postponement.

Beinish claimed the public atmosphere created a situation where a decision could not be made. Beinish is believed to oppose the election of leading candidate Judge Noam Solberg, who holds a political positions different from hers.

Attorney Rachel Ben-Ari, a lawyer on the committee said the vote should be postponed and a Mizrachi (Sephardi) candidate should be added to the list following the retirement of Edmund Levy, the previous and only Sephardi judge in the court in recent time.

Beinish herself retires in February, and this is her last chance to affect the makeup of the court.

Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman urged the judges to reconsider their positions.

It seems unlikely that a new Supreme Court judge will be elected before the end of the year.
