Petition for Kosher Restaurant on the Lower East Side

051515 FINAL

Who would have imagined that things Jewish on the Lower East Side of New York would get so tough that local Jewish residents must launch a petition to establish a kosher restaurant.

“Kosher Restaurant in Seward Park” is an online petition of residents of the Seward Park co-op on the Lower East Side, urging their Board of Directors to bring in a Kosher restaurant as a commercial tenant of the Seward Park Co-op.

“A Kosher meat restaurant is vitally important to observant Jewish communities such as this one since it serves as a place for community to gather and socialize around food, and also acts as a cultural center that needs our support to continue to thrive in a growing neighborhood. A Kosher restaurant will dramatically improve the quality of life for Kosher observing residents, but will also draw patrons from the many diverse populations of the Lower East Side.

“Further, there are many elderly Seward Park residents who are unable to walk a long distance, having a kosher restaurant will enable them to have a fresh meal every day.

“Diversity is an important part of why we love the Lower East Side and we encourage the board of Seward Park to help maintain culinary diversity in the neighborhood by bringing a new Kosher restaurant to Seward Park Co-op.”

  1. Yechiel Baum says:

In the past, there has always been a multitude of Kosher restaurants and Pizza shops on the Lower East Side which also attracted tourists and former residents to come back and visit, spend money for local consumption and visitors.

Why have they disappeared. I used to visit but not for a while since nothing to show the family and take them to eat for a traditional great tasting kosher meal.

  2. Alan Kardon says:

Unfortunately, if none or very few go to these restaurants they go bankrupt. Also if any establishment that wanted to open in a co-op they would have to get approval.

  3. ”A Kosher meat restaurant is vitally important to observant Jewish communities” i know plenty that do without even a dairy restaurant – why do folks in NYC have such a sense of entitlement? If the free market economy validates the profitability of a kosher meat restaurant in the LES, it would be there – but under the economy Obama brought, most people can't afford to go to restaurants at all – I don't remember the last time I ate in a restaurant (unless I was working there in hashgachah/kosher supervision) – the only meat restaurant in Kiryas Joel (Kosher Grill) just closed down because nobody can afford to go out to restaurants, and they had affordable prices, just not enough business – even dairy restaurants struggle

  4. Edward Lobel says:

Your stated reason for people not eating in Kosher restaurants on the LES is because of the economy that President Obama brought upon is simply not true! If anyone is responsible for what you call the poor economy is EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN/TEA PARTY person who has made it their mission to destroy everything that the duly elected President has tried to do. From stimulus money to low priced private health care. As for the poor economy, you are a rabbi and should really be honest, the poor economy is a direct result of republican/tea party and President Bush's economic strategies, such as not paying for an unnecessary (and very possibly and illegal war,) and unfunded tax cuts.

  5. Brandon Binyamin Akiva Grega says:

Edward the problem is he is being honest, you are one trying to lie on a Rabbi's page.

  6. Edward Lobel says:

Brandon Binyamin Akiva Grega Sorry Brandon, but if you believe that, then it is you who is the LIAR. If there was a real demand for a Kosher restaurant on the LES then why did all the others close. You do know and understand that repubs/tp believe in supply and demand, so if there were demand then the supply would follow sort of like Reagan's trickle down (more proof it doesn't work!) Furthermore anyone who believes that President Obama is the reason that the economy is so bad people cannot afford to go out to eat, they are simply Lying to cover their hatred and bigotry as the real facts are that the economy poor economy is the fault of republicans who under George bush started the bad economy and it has continued because the current republicans refuse to pass any legislation presented by President Obama, even the legislation that the republicans actually proposed, They simply hate and disrespect the President and that itself is a shame. Sorry if you think my comments are against the Rabbi, I always though we Jews liked the idea of free speech. I guess there is that sect of Jews who only believe in free speech when you agree with them!
