Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu announced that the Tal Law, which sought to increase the numbers of ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students serving in the IDF, will not be extended by 5 years.

Netanyahu said he intended to consult with his coalition partners to decide the length of the law’s extension.

The law, which was instituted in 2000, permits full-time yeshiva students to postpone their conscription every year until age 22. Before the Tal Law, yeshiva students who stopped studying full-time were immediately conscripted.
