The Polish-Jewish community is still practicing shechita (kosher slaughter), despite a January legal ban on ritual slaughter passed by the country’s parliament, the Sejm. Last week, a bill that would have created an exception to the ban, thus re-legalizing both kosher and halal slaughter, was voted down in the Sejm, 222-178.

American-born Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich told the Jerusalem Post, “I have no hesitation to do shechita. When it becomes necessary we certainly will do shechita [again] because I believe it’s legal.”

Polish Minister of Administration and Digitization Michael Bon, who deals with religious issues, has recommended the re-examining of the ritual slaughter ban to see whether it contradicts the Polish constitution’s prohibition against violating freedom of religious worship.

What's the big deal about prohibiting non-humane kosher slaughtering methods — or Halal — when we know today that when done — especially in the industrial context — the animals suffer terrible ordeal in the process? Let's keep in mind that there is no Jewish law that demands that we slaughter animals — no 1 is Jewishly required to do Schitah and kal va-chomer to eat meat. Having said that, I do not think that the industrial stunning-before-butchering option is either humane (too many misses). Whenever you want an animal to die so you could eat her instead of mushrooms and pineapple the animal will terribly suffer regardless of the method. But most of us eat it bc they neither see nor do the butchering. How easy on the conscience!
