Israel this week arrested a would-be suicide bomber in Nablus, a town recently handed over to the Palestinian Authority. The arrest highlighted the continued violation by Palestinian terror organizations of a cease-fire agreement announced in February, security sources say.

“Palestinian violations since February 8 include more than 200 rocket and mortar attacks against Jewish communities in Gaza, a suicide bombing that killed five, and several attempted bombings and shooting attacks.

Security sources also report Palestinians have been smuggling heavy weaponry from Egypt into Gaza’s Rafah region with the assistance of Hamas and Palestinian intelligence. Since the beginning of 2005, there have been approximately 30 incidents of smuggling from Egypt’s Sinai region, some to the Gaza Strip and some to the Negev, sources say. In that time, weapons brought into Gaza include approximately 1,000 rifles, dozens of RPG launchers, about 150 handguns, five anti-aircraft shoulder missiles, and tens of thousands of bullets.

“The weapons are being smuggled with the help of Hamas and Palestinian forces through tunnels in Rafah. The PA claims to have shut down the tunnels, and they did close some, but others are open, and they are actively helping the smugglers,” said a source. Additionally, Hizbullah, at the direction of Syria, maintains a terror apparatus of hundreds of Palestinian militants in the West Bank who receive full-time salaries from the Lebanese group.

Palestinian security says it intercepted a series of communications, including phone calls and e-mails, between Hizbullah and West Bank terrorists indicating Hizbullah had been trying to recruit suicide bombers to carry out attacks that would sabotage the cease-fire agreement.

The official Palestinian media, credited by many for reformist policies reportedly implemented following the election of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, claimed last week Israeli forces X-rayed a woman to death at a checkpoint.

The WAFA news agency, controlled by Abbas’s Fatah party, asserted, ” ‘An aged woman died late on Wednesday at the Rafah crossing after being subjected to the Israeli radioactive detection device installed at the Rafah crossing to screen Palestinian travelers,’ reported Dr. Michael Widlanski, professor of political communication and comparative politics at Hebrew University. Medics at Rafah said that the 55-year-old Fatema Abu Ubeid, of Rafah, died 15 minutes after she was subjected to the radial spy machine, which Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) set up for searching the Palestinian passengers passing through the point.”

The report was also issued on Palestinian radio and television. An IDF spokeswoman confirmed there was no such death. Israeli Defense Forces at certain key checkpoints use non-radiation emitting SafeView Millimeter Wave Radar machines, American-made advanced portals that utilize millimeter wave holographic technology to screen passengers for weapons and explosives. “You’re exposed to more radiation standing outside for two seconds on a rainy day,” said an official.

Hamas warned this week against any American attempt to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying such a move, currently being debated by the U.S. Congress, would spark immediate violence throughout the Middle East. Any U.S. resolution recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will explode the region into violence and end the current “calm” in the Palestinian territories, said Hamas spokesman Mushir Al-Masri, responding to a recent congressional discussion regarding a draft resolution requesting the U.S. administration recognize Jerusalem as the “united and eternal capital” of Israel before officially recognizing any future Palestinian state.

The Hamas spokesman demanded Jerusalem be reserved for the capital of what it called its future state. “We will not accept less than this at any time,” Al-Masri warned.

Israeli and U.S. officials reacted positively to Syria’s claim it had removed its intelligence forces from Lebanon with last week’s reported withdrawal of troops, but Damascus continues to secretly maintain intelligence agents in Lebanon, former Lebanese prime minister Michel Aoun said in an exclusive interview this week.

“I have been given some information that confirms the presence of Syrian intelligence agents still operating inside Lebanon,” said Aoun, considered likely to become the next Lebanese president. “This includes the infiltration by Syria of the Lebanese security forces, some of whom are acting for Syria.”

“This comes from high level sources on the ground,” Aoun said. “Intelligence forces have carefully relocated. Plus the penetration of Lebanese intelligence by Syria is very deep. Many Lebanese intelligence forces, who may appear [to be] working for Lebanon, are really Syrian-trained agents.”

While Aoun wouldn’t specify the location of Syrian agents, senior Lebanese opposition sources told WorldNetDaily last week Syrian intelligence officials have set up shop elsewhere in Lebanon, including refugee camps and Hezbollah bases.

Aoun says that in spite of current setbacks he is hopeful for the future of his country. “After new elections, we have a real chance for a free Lebanon, to elect a real government representative of the people,” he said.
