Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau wrote President Barack Obama  that God, via the American people, “appointed you…President of the United States,”  and that as a defender of freedom, he should release Jonathan Pollard from prison more than 28 years.

Rabbi Lau quoted from chapter 14 in the First Book of Samuel, which refers to King Saul’s son Jonathan with an impassioned outcry, “Shall Jonathan die?” The rabbi says he feels the same please from his heart for Jonathan Pollard.

Rabbi Lau reminded the President that Pollard’s life term in prison for passing on classified documents for Israel was unduly harsh and “unprecedented.”

  1. Actually the life sentence was far from unprecedented. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed after having been convicted of espionage. John Walker, Aldrich Ames, and Robert Hanssen are all serving live sentences and Jerry Whitworth is serving 365 years. Pollard has been eligible for parole for 17 years but has never bothered to apply. Perhaps Rabbi Lau can visit Pollard and convince him to apply.

  2. so why if the sentence is only 2-4 years for this crime why has Jonathan Pollard received a life sentence? that seems so unfair, unless they don't have any knowledge of what justice is? If they discriminate against Pollard simply because he is Jewish?
