U.S. President Barack Obama.

In an election that spells the end of the Democrat’s vise over the U.S. Senate, U.S. President Obama now looks ahead to a long 27-months of lame-duckship.

Obama and the Democrats have had their talking points headed with “blame Republicans for Washington gridlock,” but the U.S. administration and its cheering squad in congress will now own the gridlock title, as columnist Jonathan Tobin at Commentary rightly predicted going into yesterday’s election.

The Republicans have taken control of the U.S. Senate, gaining 7 seats from the Democrats, and retained control of the House, achieving a net gain of 10 seats. The Republicans have 235 of the 435 House seats, so they are ahead by a comfortable margin.

Political commentator Charles Krauthammer objected to the use of the term “wave” to describe the routing of Democrats in yesterday’s election. He diagnosed it instead as a “tsunami.”

The growth of House control by the Republicans spells changes in chairmanships of important committees. One to watch will be the Ways and Means Committee, which will be headed by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. This committee is about to rewrite the tax code, and given the IRS scandals and numerous investigations which critics have claimed were stymied by the Democrats’ control, this should be interesting to watch.

Similarly, the control by the GOP of the Senate will have a significant impact on committee chairmanships in that chamber. Insiders are expecting Sen. John McCain to assume leadership over the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Watch that space! McCain has been deriding this administration’s bungling of foreign policy all over the globe.

Another big change is that Harry Reid will no longer be the powerful Senate majority leader. That plum is expected to go to Sen. Mitch McConnell, although Ted Cruz (R-TX) very publicly refused to commit to backing the Kentucky Republican in what looks to be a secondary backstage battle to watch next week.

A breakdown of significant changes and what they mean for those who care about U.S.-Israel relations to follow.

  1. Great article Lori…Obama's ego is very bruised at the moment, and he will lash out as all narcissists do when confronted by their helplessness. He will point blame, and get as nasty as he can short of getting himself impeached (which should have happened already!) However, all narcissists ultimately implode, and slink away. Yes, he might ultimately make Israel his target for his frustrations (and, because he's an anti-Semite, anyway) yet nevertheless, he will come out looking like a bigger fool than he already is. Allevei!

  2. Now, if they can keep his pen and phone away from him we might be okay. It all depends on whether the Republicans will listen to the will of the people with more respect than the Democrats did. Say, for instance, with regard to relationships with Israel.

  3. UNFORTUNATELY THE BI-PARTISAN MOSLEM BROTHERHOOD INFLUENCE IS GOING NOWHERE ANYTIME SOON, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT'S ANTI ISRAEL POLICIES OF INTIFADA THREATS AND THE "PALESTINIAN STATE" ARE NOT LIKELY TO GO AWAY, WHILE THERE IS A KARL ROVE AND OTHER HIGH RANKING BI-PARTISAN IKHWANI NAZIS WITHIN THE STATELESS U.S. JOHNS "MCCAIN, KERRY" ARE THE CAMP COMMANDANTS IN WHAT IS SLATED TO BE A RELIGIOUS CARNIVAL OF TYRANNY AND THE NAZIISM THAT IS ISLAMIISM "AS PER THE MOSLEM BROTHERHOOD CHARTER 1928"

  4. Ms. Lowenthal Marcus's conclusions are all right on point. Whether the Republicans will actually be able to affect policy over the next 24 months will turn entirely on whether they are disciplined enough to actually pass legislation that implements their program and stops Obama from implementing his. They also have and should exercise the right to conduct hearings effectively — and that means force the attendance of important witnesses, force the production of internal administration documents that actually show what's going on and what has been going on, and question the witnesses intelligently. It's far from clear that the Republicans have the skills or the discipline to do these tasks as well as they will have to be performed in order to actually rein Obama in in all the ways he needs to be reined in.

  5. Rodulfo : you are right it is not because Republicans have come topower finally that netanyahou has the right to keep eating chocolates all day long! It is up to him to expell arabs and save Israel or…go away and watch tv home! This is not a job for a chickensh. which the only right thiung ebolabama said.

  6. They didn't seize anything; they won it in an election.
Also, they won almost everything in the entire country on every level, so the headline is inadequate on its face.
Unfortunately, the probable senate majority leader, Mitch, the little bitch, has immediately taken any leverage from Republicans and stated that he thinks his members aren't coming to Washington to "fight all the time." He hasn't the strength, courage, or ability to be effective & is almost as much of a problem as Obeyme in that he won't do anything effectively to stop him.
