Israeli singer Arik Einstein was hospitalized in critical condition at Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv Tuesday night, where he died shortly before 11 PM Tuesday.

Einstein was suffering from shortness of breath earlier in the day and then collapsed in his home in Tel Aviv. A family member contacted Magen David Adom and he was resuscitated in the ambulance on the way to hospital. The doctors initially suspected a heart attack.

His wife Sima Eliyahu was at his side, as well as his friends from decades of work together: producer Zvi Shissel, comedian and director Moni Moshonov, singer songwriter Shalom Hanoch, comedian Dori Ben Ze’ev, singer and composer Mickey Gavrilov and radio host Eli Israeli.

Einstein, 74, is considered Israel’s greatest singer of all times, who worked with major creative people like Shmulik Kraus, Shalom Hanoch, Mickey Gavrilov, Yoni Rechter, Itzhak Klepter, and Shem-Tov Levi.

The newspaper Ma’ariv has just announced this week that Einstein was signed up to write a new weekly column.
