Billionaire financier George Soros has pledged $1 million for humanitarian aid in Syria, AP reported.

Soros announced the pledge on Wednesday night after receiving the International Rescue Committee Freedom Award for his “lifelong support for human rights and an open society.”

Soros said the situation in Syria “has arisen because both the government and the rebels use the denial of humanitarian aid as a tool of war.”

He warned that “conditions for the civilian population are deteriorating because both sides continue to interfere with aid delivery in order to improve their negotiating positions in the coming peace talks.”

With the number of the displaced and suffering in Syria reaching around ten million people, the Soros pledge will provide as much as 1 dime per suffering Syrian.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said last week that the minimum amount required to deal with the suffering in Syria is $4.4 billion.

George Soros’ current estimated net worth is $20 billion.
