A 17-year-old Turk died of his injuries in the small Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar on Wednesday, after being hit by stray gunfire from across the border in war-torn Syria.

Mahsun Ertugrul died in hospital after receiving a gunshot to the chest on Tuesday, the Dogan news agency said.

A 15-year-old boy from the same town was in intensive care after being shot in the head by a bullet from Syria.

The town of Ceylanpinar is situated across the border from the northern Syrian town of Ras al-Ain, where the Free Syrian Army has been clashing with Kurdish fighters loyal to the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Syria’s branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Numerous civilians on the Turkish side have been injured in a similar way in recent months.

Last summer, President al-Assad’s forces pulled out of Syria’s majority Kurdish areas, and Kurdish militia took over.

The Kurds in Syria are equally hostile to the government, which has repressed them for decades, and the rebels—whom they keep out of their area to avoid provoking the government army.

After the death of the teenage boy in Ceylanpinar, locals tried to prevent an injured Syrian who was evacuated to Turkey from being taken to hospital, Dogan reported.
